Hi Keith

couple of years ago, we stayed in Hilton Cavalieri, it was quite expensive, we stayed on Hilton Points, it was a lovely hotel, great service, amazing food, fantastic pool, but a bit out of Rome itself. The view from the rooms over to St Peters was amazing, there was a free shuttle a few times a day into and out of Rome and taxis were fairly reasonable and plentiful. I have heard that the Marriott Grand Flora is very nice and also I think there is a Westin or W hotel there too. Whichever you chose you'll have a great time, I loved Rome, but wear comfy shoes.

Hi Keith,

I love Rome and stayed in a lovely hotel it is 4* Superior, it has a breakfast room on the roof, it is an old Villa style hotel! The name is Villa Morgagni. It is simply stunning, we booked a smart room, which had a bug plasma screen. huge windows! The website is http://www.hotel-rome-villamorgagni.com/index.html

Thanks Dominic

Did a search but nothing came up.
Many thanks,

The Hotel Eden was quite nice on my one and only Rome trip. Not superb, but not bad either. Restaurant on the roof is OK, although again, not Earth shattering.

As to Rome itself, it's not my favourite city. It attracts the usual extra-cultural experiences that all too often frequent many European tourist traps, for example the ubiquitous amplified South American wooden pipe band.

Finding a cab is impossible.

The real stinker was catching some local with his hand in my pocket in an attempt to nick my wallet on the metro (after I'd failed to find a cab).

In my view, Rome is second only to Marrakesh as an overrated experience. Have I put you off yet? ;-)

Cheers, Howard

Howard - while we agree on many things (EK, DP, Hotel Eden ...) I 'totally' disagree about Rome. It is in my opinion one of the most amazing, beautiful, fascinating, wondrous cities on earth ... just to walk the streets and come across Roman temples around which more recent structure are built, astounding churches, art, the whole St Peters thing ... I drop to my knees about the whole thing. Yup, there is a downside, if there are good restaurants I've yet to find them. The hotels are expensive and the 5* ones do not meet the standards of other cities. But as a walking city it is amazing.

I like the Hotel Grand Minereve on the Piazza Minerve to be very good, especially in summer on the roof, and within walking distance of everything.

On my one and only visit the bag snatching and pick pocketing was a total pain.I am glad I have seen it but wouldn't go out of my way to return.I will not recommend the hotel we lodged at as it was a rugby trip and in one of Romes more colourful areas:D

We went to Rome in April and had a fantastic time - what a great city for sightseeing, and random restaurant selections provided good food and good value.

I can't remember the name of the hotel we stayed at - it was a non-chain 4 star with small rooms and nice furnishings. Next time I go, I'd probably go for the Radisson SAS there and try for the "Weekend Extend" offer for Gold members of Goldpoints Plus.

Incidentally the BA flights there were very plesasant, the approach into FCO brings interesting views and the public transport (train then metro) to get to the hotel was excellent.

No experience of the pickpocketers but it pays to be on your guard in any major capital.

Most Euro cities have the same problems and to be honest its not really my idea to go but my wife really want to see same so as a one off I dont mind. I was looking at the Eden and it looks v nice on the website but the Hilton reports seem to be very good also.

Hey Keith

Just to drop one last hotel in to the pot, the Hotel Bernini Bristol Part of the summit hotel group.
The hotel is in a great position for discovering the city, It also hase a beautifull roof top resturant where the sunday brunch is a must do.

My father-in-law uses it quite often when he goes back home to italy for visits.
