...when your airline messes up.

I subscribe to the lovemoney.com newsletter and they recently published this very useful guide.

Whilst I appreciate the more seasoned traveller on v-flyer will probably be fully aware of their rights, it may help some of our less well informed members.

Great find Bazz.

Reading that makes one realise that airlines (even U2 for example) actually do go beyond what they are meant to with regards to how they deal with a delay or similar.

Of course there is a fine balance to be had with the regulations. On the one hand the regulations cannot be so strict (and excessive) that the commercial benefit of running an airline is lost. Equally though one does not want the consumer to feel aggrived or ripped off.

Luckily I have only ever had a ridiculous delay once, it was a domestic flight in the UK, I elected to get home under my own steam when the airline said the delay would be c.14 hours. In the end I got the train back from GLA to Exeter and the airline paid for my train fair back!

The only bad delay we ever had was with VS MCO-MAN a 24 hour delay.
We got put up in the MCO Hyatt, got some food vouchers for use in the nice bar/restaurant they have at the Hyatt and 50k miles each (we were in Upper). We were perfectly happy with how that turned out, it was over a bank holiday so didn't impact on our jobs either.

Ditto on that a couple of years ago.

Given two adjoining rooms as a family of 4 in the Hyatt. The Hyatt provided toiletries and even sun cream to sit at their pool.

VS gave 37500 miles each (flying PE) and 22500 each for the kids. Blew all the food vouchers on a dinner at McCoys(?)and some wine to take back to the room. (Had to splash out for Krispy Kreme for breakfast)

The one time we had a flight cancelled, which was with Virgin ex JFK, they were shocking, no hotel accommodation because there was none available. These rules are ok in principle but who is making the airlines stick to them. Despite numerous communications with Virgin all we got were some compensation in the form of miles, not too bad for us as mile whores, but god damn awful for your average Joe traveller.
