Skytrax Airline of the Year 2004

So the results of Skytrax Airline of the Year 2004 was recently published http://www.airlinequality.com/2004/group_results.htm.

Where is Virgin Atlantic?? The only podium finish I can see is 2nd for the Best Business Class category. Does anybody think this really reflect on the quality of service offered by Virgin?? Or is the quality and service of the airline is really that bad that it doesn't even make the top 10??

To save us all looking, how was the survey completed, and by whom?

If this is a US domestic survey, then you would expect the bulk of respondents to cover your American, Delta, Continental etc. If international, then maybe VS suffers from being a long haul, smaller network, so the intra-European travellers' comments reflect BA, Lufthansa and so on.

The only type of survey where VS will score well is where allowance is made for the route network and number of passengers carried.

If you want VS to score well in a survey, make sure that VS flyers know where to go to complete the survey. Tell us about it here!

Personally, I wouldn't give that survey any credit anyway.

You only have to look at their comments page to see that Skytrax aren't too interested in good comments about VS. I submitted a (admittedly lenghty) positive review of my last trip - see 8th April - and just a short paragraph of it got put in there.

Also, if you look on the right hand yellow panel, under "Passengers comment about airlines ...", the VS comment has been on there for ages [V]

You are right, I also read the passenger comments and I couldn't find a positive comment unless I have missed one. I think the site is so biased to VS. We all here as a frequent flyer to Virgin, we know what type of excellent service that VS can provide us, that is why we keep coming back for more.

There are a couple of positives on there (I know, cos one of them's mine, even if they did do a hatchet job on it ), it just seems funny to me that the vast majority are negatives. That quote on the side panel sort of reaffirms that.

The other thing to consider is that by nature, most people are more inclined to post comments on public sites when they've been "wronged" *sigh*
