I soooo would have! Unfortunately we compromised and paid for the works. Then flew economy, and I did ask for an upgrade from my VS account manager but on the basis I sell around 100 tickets a month for VS not because I was on honeymoon. And no - I didn't get one as J and W were jam packed...

but why do so many people spend a small fortune on a wedding and then fly themselves away in Economy on honeymoon and hope/ask for an upgrade? For such a 'special occasion' surely treating yourself and your new husband/wife is worth more than the posh flowers, chocolate fountain or four bridesmaids on the day? I know what I'd rather spend my hard-earned on and I am surprised that more couples do not think the same?

Don't quite agree with this. The wedding in itself is a memorable occasion and will stay with you for the rest of your life. A trip in UC will come and go and probably forgotten by the following week. I sure wouldn't go with Sainsburys flowers and a packet of Cadburys choc & nut for my guests so I can fly UC on my honeymoon.

What the OP didn't say is if they have booked with VA or VH or if they've bought flexible tickets or not. We get to travel UC because we book non-flexible tickets, which are substantially cheaper.

If the OP has booked flexible tickets, could they not be cancelled and replaced with Zs in UC assuming there are Zs available?

to be fair even the z fare tickets are a hell of a lot more expensive than any economy ticket.

Not necessarily true. I booked a sale fare in Z to EWR in September and the difference between that and a fully flexible economy ticket for the same date is 3.10

... and the OP has said they're already booked in PE.

at the end of the day it's a few hours out of your life, if you can afford UC great if not, nevermind, you're all stuck in a tin can 30 odd thousand feet in the air and you will all get there at the same time!

Good job you work on check-in, and not in marketing or sales....[:w]

The only time I have been upgraded from PE to J is on the second LAX flight of the day on a Saturday 6 months after 9/11. It was clearly a quiet time for flying and off season (March) and all four of us on VH tickets were upgraded, as were the people in front of us at check in. It was the old seats (pre-suite) but the first time for all of us in J and we were delighted. Have flown many times with VS since for work in J and leisure in PE and as a long time silver card holder have never been upgraded since, and don't expect it. I still think PE from LGW in the bubble at the back is great - you don't need to pay the extra for leisure.

I'm also a BA silver card holder (have missed gold by a whisper for the last two years [:(]) and the only time I've been upgraded was from J to F on Qantas - I guess due to OneWorld, but I thought Qantas FFs would be ahead of me in the pecking order. Much appreciated, all the same.

I think the general advice is, whatever your status, don't expect it or set your hopes on an upgrade. If you happen to be on the right flight at the right time, you've caught a lucky break.

I'm flying out on my honeymoon on Saturday from Manchester to Orlando. My wife to be had a long debate about whether to pay for PE over ecconomy. In the end we decided to just go ecconomy as its only 9 hours and save the money to treat ourself out there.. An update would be nice but in the current environment there not going to give freebies!

I don't know if you anyone knows the answer to this, but when we tried to reserve seats online we saw that you couldn't book any of the 2 seat rows at the back of ecconomy. I spoke to virgin atlantic they claimed that you could only get the seats by paying at the airport. Is this right? If so how much would it be? We were hoping to checkin online.

Welcome to V-Flyer, Nick.

See this thread, from last year, about the selling of the extra legroom seats on the LGW / MAN planes.

It is a long thread, discussing the pros and cons of the policy, but most of the useful info is in the first few posts.

Edit this thread is shorter, but has the info. [:D]

VS did this on a number of flights and upgraded all PE pax where loads were light, to effectively close down the PE cabin. I don't know if it made financial sense but I saw it happen more than once and also on a flight from LAX two weeks after 9/11.
