I've never received an email back.
To check, go back on the site and put the details into the update or check boxes. The application number would have been provided at the end of the initial application.
They don't send confirmation emails. I printed off my confirmation page once my application had been accepted
You don't get an email (would be good if you did as they could use the fact of a 'bounce back' as a flag)
Its really only an issue (but not a major one as you can jst apply again) if you plan on going back to the states in the next two years and need to update it.
My trick was to cut and paste the code it into a word document and keep it along with other travel stuff.

Thanx all,
I made a note of the application numbers but can't find the scrap of paper anywhere. I was using some-one elses lap top at the time and didn't think to copy it into an email to me, der!!!. anyway we only fly to USA about every other year anyway so shouldn't have a problem then. I could kick myself when I do things like this. [ii]

Mine runs out 5th August, already set my reminder.
(Something else that's starting to catch people out too are UK photo driving licenses, as they only run for about 10-15 years before needing replacing and you don't get a reminder)
Regards
I got a reminder on the driving license too when it ran out last September. My new one is valid for 10 years.

When we flew to Vegas in Setember i had done all the applications for ESTA and each one was confirmed with a ref number that i (at the time) assumed would be confirmed in an email.
To cut a long story short, at check-in they said one application had not been done.
as i had not got the ref number i thought we were stuffed.
Check-in were able to put this through manually at the desk and it only took a few minutes.
This did cause aother problems as all our seats were re allocated due to one pax not having ESTA confirmed on the system.
These were bulkhead seats reserved for a disabled pax but hopefully VA will have ironed that glitch out by now.

I'm sure the DVLA have shares in Photo-Me. 20 to renew, 5 for 5 passport sized pics. What a $^$ liberty! What will we do when cheques have gone!

I emailed customer services at vs regarding the loss of our application numbers and received the reply'we cannot make ammendments to reservations in this department' (not their actual words). So theu haven't even read my message.
I've gone back onto the ESTA site and in the faq it says I need to reaply as I'll have no idea if my aplication has been granted or not.
So there's the answer, must be quite a usual problem to have an answer in faq I should think. Why don't they send an email I wonder.

It's handy to keep a copy of your ESTA number, just so you know you have it, but to be honest, don't lose any sleep over it.
1) If the airline say you don't have an ESTA on the system, all you need is internet access for a few minutes to go and get one sorted (even easier if you are failing OLCI because your ESTA isn't checking out).
2) There is, apparently, no need go back to the ESTA site, retrieve your existing ESTA and change/update 'address while in the US' details for each visit.
The APIS information (first night address) for each trip you make, which you give to the airline either at booking time or at check-in, takes precedence of that submitted for the ESTA application.
I have never retrieved and updated the address on my ESTA since applying for it, and have now done multiple entries with it, through different ports of entry, with different first night stops, and so far, 'nothing bad' [tm] has happened to me.
3) I flew Air NZ over Xmas through LAX, and they have recently converted to the paperless Visa Waiver (100% ESTA) system for their main flights entering through LAX (NZ1, NZ2, NZ6 - the RAR/APW-LAX flights still require I94Ws). No problems experienced on my trip, and less paperwork.
Hope this helps, so you can relax and get on with enjoying your trip!

Mike, can you validate this. Like a diligent good boy I always update my ESTA because I was sure that I'd heard someone from the US Consulate say you should, but then that was on a programme where he also said that not handing your green visa waiver stub in was no problem 'cos they trash them all anyway (taking a direct update from the airlines' systems tells them you've left the country)!

There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

The ESTA FAQs on the US Embassy sites says that people 'may' update but 'it is not reqired

How long is my travel authorization valid?
Travel authorizations are generally valid for two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. A visitor may travel to the U.S. repeatedly within the validity period without having to apply for another ESTA.
quote:
Do I ever need to reapply for travel authorization through the ESTA?
Yes, there are instances when a new travel authorization via ESTA would be required. If you have acquired a new passport or had a change in name, gender, or citizenship, or if the answers to any of the yes or no ESTA questions have changed, a new application must be submitted. Also, once the travel authorization expires, a new travel authorization via ESTA is required. Applicants may also update their destination addresses or itineraries should they change after their ESTA has been approved, although this will not be required

A member of airline staff (having looked back at my flights at the time, I'm fairly certain now that it was a UA agent at LHR) told me that having the correct first night stop in the APIS info was the important thing, as both VWP eligible visitors and US Visa holders have to provide this.

I also never updated our ESTA on our last trip. We only went to the US a few times last year but I just totally forgot on our last trip and it wasn't a problem at all.
As Tonty has pointed out, the ESTA site does say it isn't a requirement, only an option if you want to.

What really puzzles me is that you can apply for a photo card licence online the first time round. They link it to your passport. But you can't do this for renewals!

I did the retrieve thing this time, and it came back instantly, as with the first application. But what I did notice is that the ESTA expiry date stays at 2 years from the original application.
I'm wondering when there will be charges brought in for ESTA (can't believe it won't happen at some stage) - is it ok to do a new application, even though I've updated my address details, so I can essentially extend the date of my ESTA???

There is nothing to stop you but you will soon hit the wall of your passport expiry date as the ESTA is for two years or until your passport expires if this is less than 2 years.
My current ESTA is only for 1 year 11 months because of my expiry date.
But I guess that making multiple repeat applications will soon start to flag in their system.
