Although I'm against the profiteering against these fees, I will stick up for Virgin in respect of them imposing the charges against "their own" cards.
The charges that VS incurs are made by the provider of their card transaction service (e.g. Streamline) rather than the credit card firm who have provided the card to the customer making the purchase (e.g. Virgin Credit Card/MBNA).
From the perspective of VS, they're damned whatever way they go with these charges. There is the argument that the fare should simply be VS cost & profit + the relevant passenger duty & VAT. The flip side is that the "fare" at the outset shows what it costs to get you in the air with ancillary fees added where necessary along the way.
Either way, the consumer will want to be able to compare prices quickly & easily. For the time being that means adding the ancillary costs along the way.
