Travel agencies can hold most tickets on option for 72 hours with fare and taxes guaranteed.
Some can hold them longer, 2 weeks, or even many months. The fare is then guaranteed but any tax changes have to be updated on the ticket.
It is not in VS's interest to hold seats for a long time, they want them sold or released back into inventory.

I have had flights held for 48 hours as both Au and when I was Ag, I just asked at the time, and if not then, I rang back after 24 hours and they extended it for another 24.

Air France has 'The Time to Think Option'

The Time to Think option is a new service that lets you hold your online reservation for up to 14 days* before payment. This option is available for:
- €10 for Voyageur class** reservations on all flights within metropolitan France and within Europe, and between Europe and North Africa or Israel,
- €15 for reservations in all cabin classes (except La Première)** on all other flights.
Before the Time to Think period expires, you receive an e-mail reminder. You then simply pay for your ticket online in order to confirm your reservation in the "Manage your reservations" section. If the period expires without payment, your reservation will be automatically canceled.
* The length of the “Time to Think” period varies according to the date of your reservation and fare conditions in effect.
** Fare per person. The option is non-refundable and not included in the ticket price. manage your reservations.

The booking engine page says this is non refundable.

Note sure if this applied to FF members - I was just checking prices and routes.

I held an UC upgrade ticket on Thursday and was told I could hold it for 48 hours - I'm on Red but maybe this was because it was an UC ticket?

72 hours is the absolute maximum - a program called Calidris runs behind the booking system and will automatically purge any bookings that have been on hold longer than this.
