Hello!

I'll start with a bit of an introduction! I've been using the forum for a while now, reading the posts daily and really enjoy hearing about all of you who are so experienced in your travel! The trip reports are also so interesting! So thank you very much for all your advice and comments.

I do need some advice....(nice lead in....lol ii) )

I am flying to JFK on 24th Sept on VS45 currently on a K class ticket. I want to upgrade this outbound sector to UC (I want to experience the LHR CH for the first time!) At the moment my booking is quoting a £761 PP to upgrade.....

So what would you do if it was you?

Book now at the £761 pp, guaranteeing the seats or wait until closer to the time to see if they come down OR even wait until arrival at LHR?

Help..... :D

Are you happy to pay the £761? (I assume thats the rate per sector).

How much of a risk taker are you and how wedded are you to the upgrade?

Personally I would book now rather than wait. Prices can go UP as well as down and leaving it to the airport is definitly risking not been able to upgrade.

Others of course may differ in their advice!

How much do you want the upgrade? If it's an essential upgrade, I'd pay the £761pp for sure... I'd say from previous experiences that upgrade prices rarely go down but can quite easily go the other way!

But if you're living life a bit on the edge then you can always try with miles on the day but it's probably pretty unlikely from a K fare as it's already discounted / MPM?

Good luck either way! y)

Thanks tontybear.

"Happy" wouldn't be the word I would use with the £761 pp, but appreciate that I will have to pay for the UC experience!!

However, getting stuck in PE wouldn't be the end of the world. The UC upgrade would be a lovely surprise for the OH, however, as the "surprise" hasn't been leaked yet, i'm at no loss if we are stuck in PE!

Do you have FC miles too, if you have, you could ask what the price would be to upgrade to a S fare in PE from the K fare (S being the lowest you can up yourself using 20k miles each way - ask about availability before paying)? This assumes you are staying a Saturday night.

Great thanks slinky09 - i've got miles and so does OH so could definitely use those. I'll ask what the difference in price is from S to K.

Welcome!

If you only want to upgrade one way, make sure you let the agent know and then they will just give you a price for the K to S change on the outbound, rather than the round trip. PE coming back is no hardship, really.

And it you want to keep it a surprise, you could pay both lots of 20K miles from your own account. To take them from your OH's would either need advanced faxing of permission to VS or both of you talking to the agent.

Good Luck, with so many flights per day I'm sure there will be upgrade availability - just a case of whether you think the K to S fare difference is worth it.
