No, this isn't a burning question, more a question about smoking. I mentioned to my dear mother that there was a chance that she wouldn't be able to smoke from the time she got into the CDC to the time she smelt the air in Shanghai. This immediately garnered a veto on using the CDC. Does anyone know if I can placate her on this? I'm thinking the driver might stop briefly for 5 mins on the way? Or can she smoke in the CDC drop off point?

Thanks

No to either of the above, the drivers contract will be get you to checkin without delay and 5mins add up and thete is no where really suitable along the dual carriageways also no smoking outside of the drop off area. However there is nothing to stop your mother going out of the terminal for a fix after checkin - even some from the Club House have been known to do this and will bee along shortly to tell you how (calling mitch !!)

If she's arriving by CDC it's quite easy to exit through the door from which people who check in downstairs access the UC wing, then down the escalator and outside.

If she has a long time in the CH - then she can exit the terminal - although that is a bit of a palaver (out to flight connections, through the door to connections security, RHS to exit, into immigration, through IRIS, into baggage reclaim, and out ... but at least back in through the UC wing although she'll need to get a new BP since it will beep at security!).

I've never needed a new BC going though Upper Class wing security more than once on the same day.

Just going out the door and before going through security is the simple option.I used to land myself for a cigarette, this can be done in about 10 minutes clubhouse to clubhouse, as long as there is someone there to let you out into arrivals and IRIS is working Then you just go out at arrivals have your cigarette while walking back into departures then back through the security channel. No need for a new boarding pass just tell them that you landed yourself... I now have an electronic cigarette which keeps me going until I get to the other side!

Not sure if it's me or not but I tried to land myself a few weeks ago (I have done this several times before for a smoke) but when I went past flight connections / security they'd changed the whole layout and it appeared that you could not get into immigration via the normal walk. Basically, it looked like you could catch the bus to T5 or T1 and that was it.

I gave up, went back through fligh connections security and back to the CH.

Thank you all for the great advice. I think a sneak out before security sounds the best plan! Now to go and work my persuasion ...
