From someone on A-net: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forum ... n/5057356/
Well they sent an email to staff today saying they are getting the first 2, sub leasing the next 3 and the remainder will be delivered with the new UPPER in 2012 at which time the 3 subleased birds will return to Virgin. So looks like they will be getting more than 2.

Did you hear about the latter half of this, ComeFlyWithV?

There was more info on the movements of frames 3,4,5 as well as 6-10 posted but I deemed it not public info yet - as no announcement publicly - needless to say we have been told we will get more than the first 2 A330's in time.

Exactly. Surely in any industry any decent company is looking further than 12-24 months in advance. I agree it does stink of a tiny mess up by VS. Unless they ordered the first five 330s knowing they could send three out on lease and make more dosh- but that doesnt seem the case with the third still sitting around looking for someone to take it.

No not at all but what I am saying is that VS seems to be the only airline in the world that orders an aircraft and doesnt have the rudder painted in its colours. This is highly unusual as the rudder is the first thing that is painted, in fact I dont think it is ever painted in the green primer paint that you see on the main body.

If, as others have eluded to, VS have employed such an expensive painting technique that it can be only conducted at MAN by one contractor (i.e.: Airbus dont have the facility), then this seems a huge waste of money in a time when VS seem intent on cutting costs all round. Certainly as crew I would be mightily peeed off to hear that my 1.whatever it is% payrise has been rejected when my employer seems intent on using expensive paint techniques to undertake an unnecessary rebrand of the airline.

I have seen the photo, and agree it looks great - it just seems very strange to see a plane in VS colours with only two engines. :D :w

I have the photo, but it is copyright VS, so can't post it here - hope they hurry up and get it loaded up to the Facebook site.

Worrying is more the word id go for =P i know nothing about planes, but if 1 engine cuts out on a 747...then you still got 3 others to keep you up...but if 1 goes on the A333 then well...arent you just gona fall straight out the sky? =( Really dont like the idea of flying such a long way on two engines!

Lots of 2 engined a/c fly the atlantic every day, it is totally safe.

An a/c can fly on one engine just fine and even if both engines failed it wouldn't just drop out of the sky.

I've seen the photo too and have to agree with virginboy747 & Nottingham Nick that it looks excellent - the new VS logo really suits the plane. Will be good to see it at MAN soon.

It hasn't been released officially yet, it has just been posted on the Virgin internal site, and VS have decided not to publish to the public yet. Hopefully they will soon, as others have said, it looks really good.

As the Air Transat A330 did a few years back - and glided for over 100 miles and landed safely.

Good discussion of 2 engined safety here.

I particularly like one quote:
The public, they say, is expecting too much safety assurance from a transport means that is already astronomically safe by any standard. For example, the traveling public accepts the fact that approximately 42,000 people are killed in road accidents every year in the United States. Yet, if the same accident rate were applicable to the airline industry, that would be equivalent to approximately twelve 300-seat aircraft crashes a month with an ensuing total loss of life.
