Most spam contains links. First posts usually do not.
Is it possible to allow the first few posts if without links but delay/mod. those with? - might cut down the workload.

One of the first spam posts did not have any links and a couple of people responded. The only alerting factor was that it was in French and did not talk about travel

I fell for that French post! Mainly because I'd not seen any spam prior to this on here so just assumed they were a little lost!

Crafty b***ers!! Lol

Apologies if I am wrong on this but the latest, illund, has copied a thank you in a TR. :0

No - you are spot on.

It appears the spammers have taken it to another level. n(

The latest one (illund) took one of DarkAuror's posts from a thread, added their own link to a porn site at the bottom as a signature and reposted.

I assume they think that if the post isn't obvious spam, it will be ignored. :?

I'd put in a temp stop on posting/commenting on any new user until such time a robust solution is found..As you guys (MODS) will be fire fighting constantly..
Can only post or comment from paid subscription....?
Over the last week how many liggit new users have actually joined...?

It's a fine line. We don't want to discourage any genuine new members, but the current situation is not good.

There have been some great suggestions in this thread about how we can deal with it, and we are awaiting a decision from Pete, about the best way forward.

In the meantime, we have a hot 'delete' button. :D

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone for your patience while the moderating team worked to get this SPAM attack under control and also for your help by reporting these posts to the moderating team so quickly.

We now think we have a work around that should stop any SPAM from getting on to the main boards.

Of course I am not at liberty to say what it is, but it should stop this attack cold :|

Edit :

Well you may of noticed a post from a certain someone, the bugs are still being worked out of the work around, as are great leader so eloquently put it "b******s"

We are getting there folks...Kind of like British Rail of the 80's :D

Sorry if o/t - but why do this? What on earth is the gratification?

Does anyone have an insight into why spammers (to use a polite word!!!) get kicks out of this activity?

It's business pure and simple.

Every click to a link will generate advertising revenue. Spammers are crafty and will post perfectly normal posts to gain acceptance, then WHAM, they hit you big time.

And if they do a lot of it, their site gets rated higher by the search engines. Its a crude form of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). So if google sees lots of links from legitimate sites, the ranking in the search list is better/higher.

As Darren says, its all about business - and more traffic means more money.

Following on from Scrooge's post, hopefully a system has now been set up that should see an end to the spam posts on the site.

Of course, if you do still spot any, just use the report button and we will deal with it.

Thanks,
Neil

Just for information - mainly to new users, who are having to have their posts approved before they appear on the site.
We are still be plagued by these jokers.
We are currently getting 10-20 bogus sign-ups a day, but the new approval system is keeping the posts from the board.
It is a bit of a pain for new members, who have to wait to see their posts, but a vast improvement for everyone else.

I'm glad that life on the board has improved, I was thinking that with MS + the feds killing the Waldac bot I thought things would slow down, but I was wrong :(!
