I'm heading out to Orlando and last year I chose the included economy car which was good but this year I'm decided to upgrade to an intermediate Suv! Has anyone had an intermediate Suv? If so what kind of car can I expect to choose?
Thanks

Had one over the last few weeks from Alamo whilst in MCO you get to chose whatever models they have when you arrive, the choices were Hyundai Santa Fe or Jeep Cherokee i think it was. Santa FE was bigger with more toys, so I went for that one. Just a note though that none of them had load covers so your bags etc can be seen although windows were tinted. I asked for a cover and was told they remove them before delivery to branches to stop them being lost/ stolen/ misplaced etc .

Hello,

I always find that Alamo are generous on upgrades and I've often found through the years and we've booked a bar and ended up with something much better!

We booked an SUV for Sept last year and ended up with a Toyota Sienna - more of a people carrier but lovely with all top gadgets.

We've also had a chevy tahoe which was huge and a Jeep Cherokee which was nice too!

Thanks for the replies
Was just worried it would be a Toyota rav 4 as a few people get those! But if I get anything from the chevy - a jeep I'll be happy just hoping it's got some cool gadgets on board! I suppose it wouldnt be worth trying to upgrade when I'm there! Even though there's only me and my other half haha but were taking 5 suitcases out there and probably 6 coming home haha too much to buy!!!

We had this problem with a rental car before - first time we went shopping at the outlets, we bought a blanket at Pottery Barn and used that to drape over the contents of the trunk.

Don't forget that you get to pick your vehicle from those parked in the car park with Alamo. Have a good look around them (inside and out) and pick the one that suits you best.

However, don't set your mind on one specific type/model as you may not get what you expected as availability depends on the time of day and the time of year etc that you pick up.

Have a good trip.

Hi Fordie,
I have the same concern as you, we go in 5 weeks and have booked the same car, there are 3 adults and cases. This has answered my questions. Thanks.

We've found that on our last 4 trips, there has not been a lot to choose from, must be the time of day we arrive. Dollar let you choose any car now as well as Alamo.

Hubby only ever books the standard car but has never actually had to drive one as he has found that there is nearly always an upgrade available for minimal or no extra charge.

On our last trip to Florida in 2009 we ended up with a bright red Ford Mustang (One of Hubbys dream cars :) ) which I have to say was very comfy for the 2 of us (and ultimately quite cool Lol) He did pay a little extra and I'm afraid I can't remembr exactly how much but I know it wasn't too bad.

If you see a Grand Cherokee I'd go for that; try to get a newer model if you can.
I've had two now and have been quite impressed for a US car. 290hp from the 3.7V6 - but weights the best part of 3 tonnes. Plenty of space - and many have severely tinted read windows so nothing viewable. You'll probably get a Laredo model but if you see a Limited (it's on the back) grab that - loads of toys.
Currently I'm getting 22MPG which isn't great but tearing away at intersections is kinda traditional - when in Rome etc...

I think the Mustang is classed as Intermediate because of it's size - but you do get a nice big engine!

It seems to be that this 'pick any car policy' is a great way for Alamo and Dollar to the higher end/larger cars out on the road. I read that they found in the recession people where hiring smaller cars and as a result the larger cars where being left with no rentals. Therefore they went for the any car policy- its a win, win situation. The consumer thinks they get a good deal as they get a bigger car and the rental company is happy as the bigger cars (of which they have more anyway) are out on the roads.

Last time I was over and hired a car- I hired a mid sized SUV but ended up with a large SUV for no extra price. Never had any bad experience of a lack of cars.
