upgrade or not

Hoping someone can help my dilemma. My husband had an accident at work and has ended up with his arm in plaster. Just in time for our trip to Florida ! We have just changed our flight to the new A330 on the way out. We are now in seats 36 DEF. Would it be worthwhile upgrading to PE, he doesn't fancy the extra legroom seats since they are further back. Have just had to pay to change the flight, were originally travelling on the later one, don't mean to be cheap but is it worth waiting until the day and trying to upgrade at the airport. We fly on the 22 June. What a nightmare, i'm having to drive, no rollercoaster or waterparks for my poor husband!! Trying to soften the blow for hm ?|

He probably would be more comfortable but you would need to know if there are seats available in PE for starters. Also you do not say whether you wish to upgrade with miles. If that is the case you may need to first of all pay the difference between your fare and an upgradeable one before you can do that. If you have booked via a travel agent you may not be able to upgrade with miles at all. If it is a paid upgrade you need to talk to whomsoever you booked with to do so, be it VS or a travel agent.

Finally, you may need to speak to Special Assistance about it. I seem to remember that a V-Flyer broke her arm recently and there were all kinds of restrictions/things needed to be done before she could fly. Hopefully she will post with the benefit of her experience

Upgrading to PE is only really a decision you and your husband can make. You will get better leg room, a more comfortable seat and a dedicated crew but you have to weigh up the cost.

As your husband may miss out on lots of the fun stuff in Florida, perhaps a little upgrade on the flight would be a nice touch!

As HL has mentioned, definitely speak with Special Assistance to ensure you have met all requirements.

Yes you MUST speak to special assistant sooner rather than later.

It is much easier to sort out any doctors letters etc etc if they are required beforehand than find out you needed them when you get to the airport - when it is far, far too late to arrange anything (and as a former practice manager believe me it does happen and there is zero anyone can do to help then)

You should also inform your insurance company too.

The girls at Virgin were very kind and helpful, they will also allow us to board early to save him getting bumped along the wayDoes anyine know if there is more room at the window seats of in the centre of the row, just wondering?

I've always found the window seats feel more spacious, probably because there are only 2 seats rather than 3 so only 2 seats between the window and the aisle

Hi. Sorry to hear about your husband's broken arm. I broke mine in Florida in January - but at least I had managed to do some of the things I wanted to do out there first.
Earlier replies have covered most of what you need to do/ have done. One thing though. You mention plaster. I wasn't allowed to fly in a plaster cast as your arm swells during the flight. I had the "real" cast put on back home in England.I assume that the type put on your husband's arm meets airline requirements ?
Is it a straight forward break ? If not,it may be a good idea to get a micro copy of the X rays to take with you just in case of any complications.
And yes, do make sure your insurance company is fully aware of EVERYTHING ! My comparatively straightforward claim was only settled last week !
Before your return to the airport I would again speak to VA prior to your flight. Even though I was given clearance, check in still phoned somewhere in Arizona for further clearance !Your husband will probably need to be swabbed for hidden explosives by security ! There is a special assistance channel at the far right of security.

We also fly June 22nd from Manchester. Yes try and upgrade and get a window seat, Hubby may get bumped into in economy, He will need the extra room to try and get comfy. I agree with the other comments, tell everybody insurance etc. Hope you have a good holiday

I would suggest exit row seats but then realised that obviously someone with a broken arm can't be safe to sit in the exit row!

I find that the CC are pretty good at looking for arms and legs in the way when bringing trolleys up and down but it is other pax who just blunder about.

I'd try and get a window seat on the side of the broken arm - no risk of knocks and due to the curvature of the cabin there will be a little more room.

Having flown the new A330 I wouldn't say that there isn't a tremendous amount more leg room in PE like you think. Unless you get seats in the 18 row. We had 18a and c and they have comedy large amounts of legroom! Its a bulk head seat, but not an exit so a broken leg wouldn't be a problem.

Then don't bother with PE, the aisles are just as narrow as economy!! And if the flight is full, there are less overhead lockers and you will be fighting for cabin space!!!
