They have to give a minimum of 7 days notice of any strike action so as the 1st July has been mentioned (but not confirmed) they would have to give notice the middle of this week so the result will be in the next day or two.

That said there is no legal reqirement that any strike has to begin exactly 7 days later just that at least 7 days notice has to be given.

Don't forget that the primary aim of a strike is to force the management to improve the pay and conditions offer and in the majority of cases no strikes actually take place.

Hi,
I just heard on the news this morning that Virgin pilots have balloted and voted yes to strike action over pay rises?
Virgin have tweeted that their pilots haven't agreed, and to ignore press releases.
Does anyone have any facts on this? If there are strikes planned, any idea when?
I am due to fly next week to the states with my family and am now starting to panic!

Regards,
Peter

According to http://www.travelweekly.co.uk/Articles/2011/06/20/37415/virgin-atlantic-braced-for-pilot-strike.html the ballot closes tomorrow - but it is expected that it will be in favour of strike action. As others have suggested, I suspect there will be a deal done before strikes start...

Glad to see you return Crewrest.

I am sure that you have the support of many on this site.

We do understand the reluctance to strike but understand that sometimes it can be the only resort remaining.

Good luck - we all hope that management will settle quickly without more damage to the brand..

They could have named strike dates already if they had wanted to. That they haven't poss means that they are waiting for discussions with VS which could at least delay the strike or hopefully resolve it all. I fly on 3rd July so hoping it resolves by then!

Having just viewed the BBC news web site the Virgin Pilots have decided to go on strike for the first time. However the BBC does not give any dates at this time. Hope its not the 11th July as i'm off to Boston.

That's a heck of a lot more representative than the recently announced NUT (36.8% of members voting for strike action) or Public Services Union (19.5% of members)

Gives Pilots the 'moral high ground' with management.

I saw a report that BALPA are meeting tomorrow to discuss plans and dates etc

I am not sure they are allowed to announce dates prior to the results of a ballot.

No, but they would have predicted the outcome of the ballot and could have had dates ready to announce along with the result of the ballot. That they didn't suggests to me that they are waiting to see the response from VS rather than using the ballot as a final decision.

Just caught up with this as I sit in the EWR clubhouse. 97% voting and 94% in favour are numbers most ballots could only dream of, so I count that as significant, and VS will have to move fast to counter it.

Will be interested to see how things unfold!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that if they do decide to go ahead it won't be until after Friday before they do so in view of the 7 days' notice requirement

I'm quite optimistic that this will get sorted out without strikes.

I base this on nothing more than my feeling that strikes in VS is the very last thing management would want given that BA have now resolved their issues, and VS also seems to be doing well in terms of improved pasenger numbers and so on.

I also have faith that VS pilots want nothing more than a sensible discussion, and wouldn't wish to go on strike.

So, I am hopeful that an agreement can be reached without strikes......but I could be proved wrong!

I agree. I've got flights coming up soon and am not worried at all.

I don't think it will get to strikes either.

You don't get such a long period without strikes to suddenly get hit by one. Negotiations are bit like playing chicken - someone will blink first.

Be happier once it is called off sonar least the VS Facebook page won't have the same question repeated every 5 minutes. :W

From the BALPA website

To give Sir Richard an opportunity to intervene BALPA has decided to delay the announcement of strike dates until early in the week commencing 27th June.
