Hi guys

I'm planning on taking my laptop onboard our flight to Orlando - will it be possible to charge it in Economy? I've had a look online and found this adaptor so I assume it will be ok?

Thanks

I'm not certain that even the new A330 a/c with the new JAM IFE have in seat power, although ISTBC on that issue.

When are you flying and on which flight? If you are on one of the current LGW 747's then you definitely won't be able to do so, if your flight happens to be on one of the new A330 or a refurbed LGW 747 later in the year, then as I say you might be able to, but even looking at the latest information provided by VS it doesn't specifically say you can (here is the latest release by VS)

I thought it was just enough to power a device but not enough to (re)charge

If you have a Empower to USB adapter, it will happily charge an iPad. Laptops are different as they draw a much higher wattage. Even using an Empower adapter, they can slowly discharge.

To the OP. If you need to keep a laptop running, you'll need to look at something like a powergorrila. But at £150, not cheap.

On a slightly different note, do you need to ask for the power outlets to be enabled - we have never found either of our Empower adaptors work, even in UC?

Often they forget to switch on the power but that is easily resolved.
Unlike some airlines they do not activate the power until after take-off which makes sense as you cannot use devices prior to that anyway.

Dixons at the airport sell a gadget called Kensington or something like that that plugs into the empower outlet (on any plane) and allows you to plug a normal UK 3 pin plug in so you can use your laptop or other gadgets - best to avoid hairdryer I think.. It cost about GBP50. In UC they do have some to end out but dont risk them all being used.
UC and PE have seat power. I am not aware of Y having it (nor on any other airline I have flown with the exception of VX)

The Empower sockets are usually turned on/off at the same time as the IFE but sometimes they do get missed. Just look for the green LED next to the socket. When this is on, Empower is switched on. If it's not on, just ask a member of the cabin crew.

Empower connectors should work on all VS Upper cabins and all LHR VS PE cabins. I've never had an issue with my Apple Magsafe airline adapter (these just power your MacBook but don't charge it)
