With very few destinations having BA reward seat availability in August :(! , I'm debating whether to go to New York for a few days (we have a few friends there and I've been enough times to know it will be OK) then Bermuda with the kids.

However, without having been to Bermuda I'm a little concerned about
(a) is it a bit too posh!
(b) is it child friendly enough
(c) will the weather will be dry enough in August

I don't mind spending a bit of money and realise it wont be a cheap holiday but is it a bit of a "Monte Carlo" type of place or is it a bit less formal and more laid back?

I also realise we wont have 24 hour sunshine and the odd (heavy!) shower is to be expected but I'll get crucified if we see very little sun!

Are the waves big enough for boogie boarding or is the sea like a millpond? I would hope as it is the Atlantic ocean, the former.

Any tips/ideas/suggestions/comments all welcome :-)

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by Bermuda.

It's a bit like England used to be years ago. There are some well off people there, but an awful lot of ordinary people. Think of Surrey towns - stockbroker-ish but with ordinary people also. I wouldn't compare it with Monaco at all.

I don't have children so I can't really answer your second point, but on the face of it can't see why it shouldn't be child friendly

The weather, I admit, can be surprising (again think of England!) August is in the Hurricane season, but very few hit Bermuda. There's a lot of History in Bermuda, and I found the people really pleasant and laid back. One morning I ordered a taxi in a hurry and a complete fluster, as I was late for a meeting. After rushing into the taxi and gabbling for 30 seconds, the taxi didn't move off. After about a minute of being stationary, the taxi driver said 'Good Morning sir - how are we to day...' which certainly calmed me down!

I loved Bermuda and found the people delightful and friendly. The beaches are beautiful and it felt so safe there. The bus service is superb. One day we caught the wrong bus and the driver radioed ahead for the other bus to wait for us and transferred us over. All the school kids getting on and off the bus were a credit to their parents and schools too |:)

Another day we were waiting for the bus when an elderly man stopped in a wonderful old classic car and offered us a lift into Hamilton. We later found out from the staff at our hotel that he was one of the wealthiest men on the island!!!!

The weather is similar to New York and can be variable so no guarantees there.

It is definitely not Monte Carlo at all. But choose your hotel carefully. We stayed at The Reefs and I wouldn't think that is so suitable for kids but they did have some private cottages just behind the hotel. There are some resort style hotels on the island too with more activities.

I would say go and enjoy and as Peter says it is like stepping back in time y)
