This is a blatant reference to VS-EWR's thread a few down about EOS Airlines, which is (as you knew) a new airline operating one return flight daily between STN and JFK from October 18th, using a 757 laid out to feature only 48 seats, all sold as business class, with the gimmick of prices considerably lower than traditional business class - starting at US$5,000 for a return trip.

MaxJET is a new airline operating one return flight daily between STN and JFK from November 1st, using a 767 laid out to feature only 72 seats, all sold as business class, with the gimmick of prices considerably lower than traditional business class - starting at US$ 779 / GBP 599 plus taxes in either direction. (MaxJET's prices apparently vary from GBP 599 to GBP 999, plus taxes.)

There's business class and then there's business class, obviously, and I'm not sure what sort of business class you can get for GBP 599 plus taxes in one direction. It's noteworthy that EOS claim 78" between seats and a suite-style seating arrangement whereas MaxJET claim only 60"; MaxJET also claim to be adding 757s to their fleet later, upon which they will seat 72 per flight. It's not completely clear that they're both using the same variant of the 757, but if they are, then that's 50% less business in your business class right there.

My gut feeling is that MaxJET have a potentially compelling product but that they're competing against Premium Economy rather than against Business Class. It looks like premium economy with a lounge and lots of legroom, as far as I can tell, though only taking the airlines in question will answer the service question which will make or break the flights. Unfortunately there isn't a snappy phrase which conveys "premium economy with a lounge and lots of legroom" other than "business class", which this sounds like it isn't. Do you think people would understand what was meant if they were to use the word "RyanBiz"?

Going back to EOS, who do genuinely look to be the business, wouldn't it be a great gimmick for them if they were to offer (say) 12,000 miles or appropriate sectoral/kilometric equivalent in whatever FF program you chose for taking a return transatlantic flight with EOS? I can't imagine it would be beyond their capability to buy, say, a million FC miles, a million AAdvantage miles, half a million Skymiles, half a million Lufthansa kilometres, three hundred thousand Eurofurlongs and so on and so on...

Interesting times, especially for slightly well-heeled Cambridge types,
Chris

Hi dickoon,

Some interesting points. Along with VS-EWR's thread (as you noted), there has been a recent thread about MAXjet.

I'm going to lock the previous threads to prevent duplication. Since both airlines are now technically "up and running" (?) discussion can continue here, regarding both of them.

Well it wasn't actually my thread, but oh well.

Anywho, I doubt EOS or MaxJET would be in any sort of position to offer miles for another airline. The only foreseeable way this would be possible if the airline was secret run by a legacy carreer (like the United - United Premium Service shindig). Although I admit, if this were possible, it would be very nice.

Between EOS and MaxJET I would probably rather fly EOS. First of all, I think because they are not using a widebody like MaxJET, it would be cosier. Second, EOS, as you said, offer more legroom. Also, the seats are staggered and look so much more comfy and private. Despite the fact that EOS does not advertise any kind of IFE, I don't think that necessarily matters when you consider the benefits. Oh yeah, I like EOS's website layout much better.

By the way, EOS's first flight is on tuesday!

I've found this link from a.net, which contains pictures from the Maxjet inaugural which arrived today.

Seems like it's plastic glasses, and DIY salad....

There was also a clip of EOS on London News today, which showed their fully flat beds - which did look rather awkward, and whilst possibly nicer than Maxjet seats in bed mode, did not look very inspiring.

The guy who took these pics is going to post a TR on a.net apparently....

Rich.

Can you post the link to the a.net page where it was linked from, by any chance?

Works well, thanks for the post Richard.

Have to say that after looking at the pics we may have a winner here, just doing the rough math it would work out about the same for me to fly to JFK then hop on MAx jet as it would for a LAS-LGW PE flight and to tell you the trouth looking at the food and seat I know where I would rather be.Let's hope they stay in buisness.

Well whoever posted those pictures sure has time on his or her hands!

Some thoughts:
- Lorean lounge looks OK
- nasty paper hair mats or whatever they're called remind me of cheap british rail
- cabin fixtures look poor but seat pitch OK, width a little questionable
- not sure I would be comfortable, seat width looks PE like but pitch certainly better
- plastic glasses?
- how do you fit the tv thing on your tray with dinner and wine?
- food looks good!

So my conclusion, if Virgin can find a few more inches and better food in PE then they'll beat it pants down!

Well I do agree about the seat width, but it still looks wider than VS PE or BA WT+.

The TV thing I didn't think about.

Plastic glasses,to be honest im more of a how much can you fit in there person[^]

not so sure about those hair mats either, but mine get buried under a pillow so NP.

The food, well after seeing some of the recent VS TR's I would have to say that the food looked (and from the TR) tasted better than anything VS is giving UC right now.[n]

The pre-departure drink was in plastic. The rest of the drinks were in glass. I personally prefer "DIY" salad dressing :).

Looks interesting...

Business Traveller have a review here.

(please would someone point me to the idiot guide on how to insert a link as 'here'!!)

Hadn't realised there was no in seat laptop power, that's a big negative in my opinion for a business class airline, however the general tone was good.

Slinky,

Click on the "Edit" icon on your post, and you can see what I did. [y]

Let me know if you can't see how to do it from that.

For those interested, a member of FlyerTalk has just posted a Trip Report of EOS. Have to say, on face value - it sounds bl**dy good... [:0][y]

(One word of warning, however - that thread may turn into a bit of a cat-fight : there's a post suggesting he works for EOS... ;))

Yes there could be a dust up [y]

I've been hearing good things about the EOS product, but to be honest the fare is to rich for my blood for that length of flight, however if MaxJet keep running their crazy fare promotions I may have to give them a try,of late it's been $750 RT inc which is a darn sight less then VS Y [:0].Even their regular fares are not to bad, however they only fly out of the east coast right now, though they have plans to fly out of the west coast at some point [y]

Now I know they fly into STN,however it does have it's advantages and now that they have more than 1 aircraft the going tech issue,at least on the JFK side is a lot better.
