Carry on favourites

I know this will be personal preference and coloured by well warn and trusted bags/cases etc....but...

What would V-Flyers recommend as good hand luggage to buy.

Just suppose you wanted the biggest, toughest, most flexible piece of luggage to take on board a scheduled airline flight, perhaps pushing the bounds of size etc, but not exceeding the regulations too far, and you were offering suggestions for back-pack and 2-wheeled, extending handle types...

What would you recommend?

Like many, I have the trusted old retainer that I've used for years, but is now showing signs of real ware, and it's time to think about buying something new. I like back-pack style bags, whilst my wife likes the pull-along style bags. Assuming cost (within bounds) is no limit (quality and durability are good), where the hell do I start with the bewildering array of options out there!

All thoughts, recommendations very welcome indeed.

Anyway, I really like my Samsonite Cubelite carry on. It's just so light for a wheeled case.

Shame there was never a "Carry on Pilot", but air travel then was so different from now..

I am a Samsonite fan (but only from Outlet stores) which of course give the quandary of buying something relatively expensive which can get damaged

Hence my current carry on (when using a suitcase) is in fact a Reebok Messenger Bag - cheap and if it is strong enough for school kids then it should last. It also means that were something to break during the trip , i am not fussed about getting a replacement

I bought a bag from Debenhams, brand is called TRIPP and I see a lot of them about. Has served me well for over five years (and counting!)

I'm also on the look out for a cool carry on
I would prefer a wheeled case but to be honest they all just seem to be glorified boxes with wheels.
How about a crumpler backpack?
They are strong, stylish and have lots of conpartments specifically for gadgets etc

With regards to a decent hard case I have yet to find anything in uk to match the Spalding one I got in Tokyo. Samsonite are hard but seriously-zips ? How easy are they to break in and also to simply break from wear and tear. I want a hardcase that is lite. Any recommendations ?

If you're looking for something light, I would reccomend the sub zero g - world's lightest 55cm. I think it just about meets the cabin luggage size requirements and it's as lightweight as can be. I've had one for just over 3 years now and it goes with me on my weekend hand luggage only jaunts around the world.

I use Troop for my luggage. Comes in four colours - khaki(which I have), grey, brown and black.

They are made of canvas so yes, can get "marked" but easy to clean. Very sturdy and hardwearing. I am not a girly girl but they aren't a masculine bag nor are they overly feminine.

My "carry on" bag has wheels but also has straps (which can be tucked away at the back) so if you need a hands free option, it is already there.

They don't come under the cheaper tag but I've had them for four years (used about once a month for flights) and needed the wheel repairing but other than that ... all is good.

but just looking for something a bit more classy if thats the right word.
briggs and riley look nice but soooo expensive! why! LOL!

I'm very happy with my Wenger neo lite 18 inch.
Light, but rugged.

It's quite a bit under the maximum size of most airline regs, but I wanted something that would definitely always fit as carry on, without any stressful check-in incidents.

Plus, it was only £50.

I posted a similar question on FT recently, as I've got a schlep around Asia coming up with a bunch of different airlines, and wanted to try and avoid checking luggage to the greatest extent possible. My requirements may be a bit different to many of you in that this is really for carrying around shirts, suits, ties etc... so something that will keep them as crease free as possible.

Anyway, there are clearly several high end/priced options out there, but this one looks like it could be a winner (any other opinions welcome...)
