Independance Air have joined the slew of other US air carriers in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection.

Some of you may remember, they used to be a United Express carrier, called Atlantic Coast Airlines, before they parted ways with UA (as UA headed into Ch 11).

There are various rumours that this could lead FlyI into becoming a suitable "shell" (the Operators Certificate, and probably some of the aircraft) into which SRB can invest to kick off Virgin America.

They certainly have a similar sense of humour to VS, from looking at their website... I like the comment about 'Pillows and Blankets': "They cost $10 each, but they’re high quality and you can take comfort in knowing that the first drool that touches them will be your own".

I believe at least one of our number is a FlyI employee - good luck, whatever happens!

Cheers,
Mike

Definately good luck to our member and all other workers for FlyI.

I flew Song over the weekend and it was one of the funniest flights I've taken in a while, the crew were great (despite being diverted to EWR as JFK was fog bound adding a 3 hour delay in which the Captain went out and bought the entire aircraft bagels (ok so there were only ~40 onboard)). The best bit was on landing the message was: "We know you have a wide choice of bankrupt airlines to fly and we are happy you chose Song..." :D

I think it will be a pitty if airlines such a sSong and FlyI are forced to close (I know Song are being closed and bough into the DL fleet and First Class added back), I hope that FlyI get some backing and maybe even sold as a shell to VS.

This does sound like the "license before Christmas" possibility for Virgin America might (purposefully?) dovetail nicely with Independence's announcement. Independence are excellent as it books one way airfares--only challenge is IAD hub, but I suppose that's better than Philadelphia!

That's a classic - love it! [oo]

Good to know that even in these difficult times a sense of humor can remain intact!
