I had figured a flight on a Friday night was likely to be busier than the pretty empty flight I had from LHR to JNB on the Monday night, so I had paid £40 to book an exit seat (31K). It was well worth it with more legroom than you could need and no obstruction from the door. Putting my small trolley case on the floor provided a home-made leg rest, which enabled me to get some sleep (I find it difficult to sleep if my feet aren’t up).
There were some empty seats in economy but not more than a spare seat between two people. I didn’t venture right down the back but I don’t think there were any 3 or 4 seat blocks empty.
Drinks and food were served pretty promptly and then it was off to the land of nod for at least some of the flight. I went for the veggie option again which was supposed to be a pumpkin coconut curry (described as mild and creamy). In fact it was quite hot and not creamy but I really enjoyed it. Breakfast was similar to the outbound flight – muffin, yogurt, hot food, OJ and tea/coffee.
We took off on time and arrived into LHR at about 6am (scheduled 6:20am). Bags were off pretty quickly and I was in my taxi (once I had worked out how to get to the drop off area in T3) and home by 7:30am.
Altogether a pleasant flight.

Glad the return trip went well, too.

Thank you for the TR.

Hi Plane sailng

There is a window but it is level with the headrest, so you have to twist your neck to see out of it. I didn't find it a problem as it was a night flight and I could see a bit of the outside world, but if you want to sit there staring out of the window it will be a problem. It is a great seat though I owuld definitely sit there again.

I also like 41D which I had on the way out - it is in front of a wall which houses the staircase to the crew rest area, but means you can recline without disturbing anyone. The ground crew at LHR told me it had a bit more leg room than normal, but that can only have been a tiny bit more as I didn't really notice it.
