The ideal carry on sized case?

Has everyone seen this? Do you really think anyone will ever manage to standardise such a thing as a universal carry on bag size?

I wonder just how frequently staff insist n passengers using those size gauge thingies anyway? I've seen them at Virgin check-in desks, but never seen anyone asked to see if their bag fits. Has anyone else been asked to do this?

Many airlines (inc VS and VA) don't consistently enforce their existing policies, thereby making changes like this redundant.

Dont different airlines have different overhead sizes?
Cant see how it is practical until they standard size the overhead lockers.
make sure they are deep enough to take the length of the bag & high enough to take the width. Would leave lots of room for the thickness then.

They should ban hardshell & weird shape bags as well, as they take up tons of space but waste a lot of space.

Better to allow each airline to have a published rule and then operate a "make sure nobody is taking the mick" approach as their own discretion. Yes some airlines play hardball but that'll be because they'll make your wallet lighter whenever possible.

I can see why hand luggage weight shouldn't be an issue - surely the weight of passengers is more of an issue.

I like to use a rucksack with wheels so I can wear it on my back when I need to haul cases, then wheel it once I have got rid of the cases. I bought one that fits VAs measurements. What I didn't realise is that the very front overhead in Upper on the 747 is slightly smaller and it doesn't fit that one.
It did go in the next one along.
I have never been asked on any airline to test the size of my carry on.

This was a potential issue for me a couple of weeks back, I used the wife's large briefcase on wheels rather than stick a bag into the EasyJet hold. I measured it before I went and it complied with the 56 x 45 x 25cm requirements (was very close on the 45cm but the others well clear). When I got the airport to check in the size gauge it wasn't even close to fitting in. Do the size gauges bear any resemblance to the sizes given? This smacks of a money making scheme after all how many people take a tape measure with them? (Well, I have in the past but it was for work.)

In the end my luggage wasn't questioned but I was ready for a fight!

I believe there was a watchdog episode about that - where the luggage gauge was
smaller than their listed requirements.

I personally think that the exterior measurements of the gauges prob are correct, but the interior ones are wrong. Hence the bag wont fit
