It’s our turn for VS103 to Atlanta today, followed by a DL flight down to New Orleans. I’m feeling a little spaced out after an early (for us) 5:30 start after one of those nights waking up every half hour to check the time (even though you know you set the alarm). Hopefully a small champagne may help.

We overnighted at the Hilton at T4 (almost the last gasp of my Hhonors points) after trying the public transport option to get to Heathrow. The Hilton was fine, though I did overindulge a little in the Lounge. And why is T4 the only terminal not to have an M&S food store? It did give us a reason to try out the intra terminal public transport options, including what must surely be one of the shortest train journeys in the world.

Our journey down from Huntingdon was all on time and reasonably bearable, though the Piccadilly Line is really not designed to take the amount of luggage it does.

This morning we took a car from the Hilton, a smart Mercedes that arrived on the dot of 6:15 which dropped us at DTCI spot on 6:30. Originally I’d booked for 6:00, but after reading Dickydotcom’s tale of waiting for DTCI to open I knocked it back a bit. Thankfully the barrier did rise for us - the last two occasions we’ve attempted to use DTCI it hasn’t. Check in was as efficient as it could be, but I do miss the days of them having you boarding passes and luggage
tags printed. Security took just as much time as putting our stuff in trays and then walking through a scanner does, and then it was eyes front to the Clubhouse, where we found a bunch of American Airlines passengers being shooed back down the stairs.

And so here we are, feeling very lucky and as we always do wondering what our parents would have made of all of this. As the Clubhouse starts to fill up, I shall sign off and wish my fellow V-Flyers the best of days.

Thanks James. One detail I didn’t notice was they’d changed our seat assignments from 15A and 16A to 17A and 17K! Luckily the lady in 16A overheard my mini hissy fit and unasked volunteered to move to 17K (probably thinking “Better not sit next to this bloke chuntering away for a near 10 hr flight...”) :)

Good Morning Pjh

So glad you have made the confines for the Club house safely and I have perhaps reflected on staying at Heathrow the night before based on your cautionary comments about the Hilton Exec Lounge ;-)

A wry smile came to my face when you mentioned about the AA passengers :)

Hope you had a great time in the Clubhouse and hopefully a great flight

It was all going so well...until they closed Atlanta due to storms as we were on the descent, causing us to divert to Charlotte for refuelling..and paperwork..and de-icing. So we missed our New Orleans connection. Delta put us on the next flight - keeping us in First - and now we’re here. 72F at 23:00 and sticky!

Oh PJH <shakes head sorrowfully>, what did you expect?

"Hopefully a small champagne will help"

A SMALL champagne? A small champagne never helped anything! I thought better of you, really I did. ;-)

Sorry about the ATL debacle, hope you'll have a wonderful time.

It turned out to be several small champagnes. I didn’t have the heart to decline the offer of more, given they had made the proactive gesture of approaching us bottle in hand.

Oh, I understand perfectly where you are coming from. When it came to hospitality in the home, guests and visitors first, family second and your place in the family pecking order was clearly defined. When you are brought up in that mentality, it is hard to put yourself into guest mode.

:) Family hold back! Only my parents extended it to cover when were guests too, as otherwise it would give the impression that we were either not fed at home or worse, we were “pushy”. Life was one long Alan Bennett play...
