BBC News report.

Flights between Glasgow and Canada have been disrupted after two planes used by Zoom Airlines were grounded over alleged non-payment of fees.......

I hope it is just an admin blip, and not yet another airline about to go belly up.

Not wanting to go into the who/whats/whys but i personally know the guys who run the company and quite a few of the crew are ex colleagues of mine.

They have started the company from nothing and built it up quite well over the past 7 years and i really hope this is just an admin blip and not end up as another statistic.

Just had an email from a travel trade group - part of which backs up exactly what Sealink has said. :

Zoom Airlines has sought creditor protection, blaming 'acutely difficult' trading conditions.

Doesn't look good. As soon as airlines start saying this, people are reluctant to make advance bookings and the spiral begins.

This is such a shame. I've never used Zoom, but was impressed at how they've taken on the hideously expensive prices or Air Canada from the UK :-(

It's always a shame when these things happen, especially for the staff on the frontline.

Worse news seems to be coming in, sadly. One aircraft has been repossessed by the leasors leaving some people stranded at least overnight in Canada, other stories talk of large debts to Calgary airport and now one of their planes detained by BAA for non payment of fees. The news is not good for staff and pax, see here.

As of 1800 UTC, 1900 BST, Zoom has stopped operations.

Aircraft already on the ground won't depart. Aircraft in the air will complete their journey, and that's it.

Apparently, VS and BA are among the airlines who will offer special fares for Zoom passengers.

Customer Announcement
http://www.flyzoom.com/

Zoom Airlines sincerely regrets to advise its customers that it has ceased operations with effect from 18:00 UTC on Thursday 28 August.

All flights scheduled to depart from have been cancelled and Zoom's aircraft have been grounded.

We have been advised that British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are graciously offering special fares to assist Zoom customers that have been displaced by the suspension of our services.

---

I'll say that's gracious. This is what Zoom said about them when they launched their New York service:

'John Boyle said: 'A new low-cost era has really taken off. People have been forced to pay outrageously high fares to fly between London and New York for too long.

'You cannot put a sheaf of paper between the prices charged by BA, Virgin and the American carriers on the New York route. It is high time that passengers had a better deal.'

------------------

And I bet at the time he was told that the New York market (In economy at least) is extremely competitive and a £129 flight, each way, isn't going to upset the apple cart. I suppose that's the rough and tumble of competition, but I can't help asking if Zoom weakened its competitors, or if it never happened would be paying even more in economy?
While there was probably a case for a strong Canadian operation, serving New York just seems madness.

This really is not good. We all know how difficult times are at the moment and unfortunately Zoom look like being one of a number of 'smaller operators' who are going to seriously struggle or shut down. Good to see other airlines helping out again, like with Oasis and Silverjet.

It again just adds to the fact the VS and the other big players are going to have to be very careful with the expenditure, we might not like it but if they don't then we might not have an airline to moan about at all, which would be much worse.

Oh dear, we have Canadians visiting that flew into GLA with Zoom and are due to fly back to Vancouver via LGW in a couple of weeks time.

At least they aren't going back tomorrow [:(]

Very sad news.

Whilst this might be regarded as 'a sign of the times' ,behind the announcement is the uncertain future for staff and I hope that good fortune shines upon them to aid with finding alternative employment

Shame to hear about Zoom going under. Never got a chance to try them out as they basically opened the UK regions to Canada with competitive fares, which is something that is now gone and probably won't come back in the current economic climate.

My commiserations go out to the staff in particular and hope they get jobs soon.

Neil, you're spot on. Seeing all these airlines going under or downsizing is a wake-up call even for airlines as big as VS as nobody in the industry is safe, even Ryanair are set to make a loss this year and they were one of the most profitable LCC's in the world.

This is a real shame. I've flown Zoom a few times to and fro YYZ as I didn't want to stomach the high prices of AC. Yes they didn't have individual IFE but other than that they offered a good quasi 'PE' product for the price.

Such a shame as Zoom was proving to be a cheaper alternative to BA on the LGW-BDA-LGW route. Reading the local rag today, there are a lot of pax who have been left stranded here and are trying to get re-booked on to the daily BA flight back to LGW.
