Can anyone recommend a good airport hotel near SFO?
There's also The Westin San Francisco Airport which several V-Flyer stayed at on our way back from Vegas last year. Again it was only 10 mins or so away from SFO.

Cshore when I'm in downtown SFO I use the hotel Niko very nice classy hotel large rooms and very big bathrooms and its close to the cable cars turnaround for the ride to fishermans wharf.

Two boys, aged 11 and 13. We don't mind staying in one room as long as it's not stupidly small. Main criterion is that it's clean. Looking to spend USD100-150 per night. Pool would be a bonus.
We're staying in Sunnyvale for the previous week or so as part of a business trip. The other option would be to stay there and commute into the city on Caltrain.
I want to know whether it's worth moving into the city for the final week...

We are going to SFO next month with our 10 and 12 year olds. I don't know what the room rates are like but the Argonaut is meant to be very good for families. We've booked the Ritz-Carlton and the only other hotel I looked at was the Four Seasons but they can't accomodate 2 children in the same room unless you book a suite for $800 per night.

So many questions for you. The big difference between staying at the airport or staying downtown is price. And time of year. Summer and fall seasons are SF's busiest. What exact dates do you plan to visit SF?
BTW, if you really like riding trains you could stay well south of San Francisco, in Daly City for example, and have a cab take you to the BART each day. But, I think we can find you something in the City. You'll be a lot happier having the hotel handy after a day of walking.

We stayed at the San Francisco Hilton over new year, junior suite was quite large with a King and double sofa bed,only cost $98+tax per night.Its only a block from union square and one of the nicer Hiltons I have stayed at,quite plush and well kept.Must say it was a lot better value than the Westin st francis where for twice the price we got a broom cupboard.
I am a big fan of the hotels near the airport as they are normally cheap, clean, and as an added bonus are part of the Hilton brand which noramlly nets 1,000 miles in the VS account.
First - The Homewood Suites. The new kid on the block. They have a free shuttle to the airport and any location in 5 miles. I suggest taking the CalTrain as it is cheaper and faster than BART. They also take you to the San Burno BART which is cheaper than the SFO Airport BART stop; esp. after the recent rate hike on the BART system. Also the Homewood Suites offers free high speed internet, free breakfast, free dinner (with wine) and most importantly great airplane spotting! There is also the Raddison next door that has a full bar/restaurant. Also all rooms split into two areas; a living room and a sleeping area, both with TVs. That maybe helpful for a family. This hotel is not on the SFO Airport hotel strip which I like. Also if you arrive late they will pay for the cab as the shuttle service only operates til 10 PM IIRC. My favourite feature is the waterfront location. You can go on a walk right at the hotel around water to this little boat dock/park area. Great for sunsets and sunrises (and jogging). IIRC Homewood properties will earn only 200 VS miles a night soon.
Next is the Embassy Suites and Hampton Inn South San Fransico; which is north of the airport. Personal I would stay at the Hampton as it is newer, cheaper, and has a basic but hot free breakfast. Downer is you only get 200 VS miles a night. The Embassy is nice but I have found the breakfast to be basic. The rooms are old. But there is one huge plus that if you go to the upper level to the right of the 'HHonors Floor' sign there is a little balconly that you can go outside and look at the airport and cargo area.
The Westin is great too; mostly because it is near the Marriot. At the Marriot they have a bar. And at that bar you can sit outside with a cold drink and watch big planes land on the two paralell runways. Also there is a park there. Many pictures on airliners.net have been taken there. I have had picnics there with my Mom and Dad. In fact my father takes the shuttle from the airport to the Marriot to watch the planes land at SFO when he has a long connection or delay.
Downtown the Hotel Vitale is nice, but costly at the rate rates. Milk and cookies on the Seventh floor as fun. Great if you plan to go to the market at the ferry terminal on Saturdays as it is across the street.
The Hotel Des Artes is a basic but cheap and clean hotel. Personally I like it as it is (well cheap) has a great location (two blocks from Union Square), 1/2 block from Chinia Town Gate and 1/2 block from a Starbucks. Also there is a bar near, Irish IIRC.
I would also suggest the MO for a different reason. If you stay there you can use the Equiex (sp) Gym. The gym is an old bank whick looks pretty cool.

I got the Hyatt Regency by bidding on Priceline for a song on two occasions. (I think it was $35 for the first stay two years ago and $47 last May I needed a twin bedded room and I had no problem with getting it. However I'm not sure when it comes to a party of four. I used this website for help. There is also a UK site but I used the American one. It's a question of post codes. We don't have them and just like the VS site the UK site wouldn't let me on. However for the purposes of Priceline I live in Indiana!! [:0]

Stayed at The Tuscan Inn (near Fisherman's Wharf) a couple of years ago. Nice, clcean place with fabulous biscotti and coffee each morning in the foyer[y] Oh and wine tasting there most evenings too:) Not too sure about price though. Enjoy San Francisco - it really is the most wonderful place:D
