Hi all

In my bored moments [:o)]!! Has anyone seen the Virgin 744 on the ground in the current shot of JFK on Google Earth ??

Anyone able to identify which aircraft?

Its easy to spot ....... but if you have any trouble I can email the place marker.

Regards

Jacq

I thought I could attach the place marker to a PM but I cant.[?]

If you have a look around you will soon spot the VA red markings

With a username of "OilyBoy", I DID wonder if one of your students had maybe tracked you down on Google, Jacq... [:w][:0]

Cheeky ;)

Nah, I know Ian from the days of having previously been an oil baron myself, with the big bad Exxon (as in Valdez, yes, and parent company of Esso).

There are some obscenely funny sites that rip into the company but only so funny if you worked for them I guess so I won't bore you all! Plus I don't want to seriously harm my shares! ;)

Well it's a VS 744 for sure, but I don't think there's any way to find the exact date the image was taken. But I do know that there is also what appears to be a Varig MD-11, Northwest 744, and Singapore 744 at the same terminal.

You can almost read the reg number from the 744 at LHR seen at
51 deg 28 min 21.64 sec N; 0 deg 27 min 47.02 sec W

So, do we have a game of spot the VS aircraft at various airports around the world.

Most of them are already listed in the original Google Earth thread.

I don't know how often (if at all) Google change the image though.

Regularly, although the images are still out of date. I know as I keep and eye on two specific places. Both of these where recently updated but are still between 18 months and 3 years out of date.

LHR is pretty out of date, not only is there no concord at the end of 27R, but there are two on stand at T4!
And before discovering this I thought I'd worked out the age of the photo's from the copyright info at the bottom of them!

I think different areas on google earth are updated at different points depending on the location. I wish though, google would watermark the date that each image is taken as you move. It can be quite annoying if you don't know the place you are looking at.

I believe you're referring to Floyd Bennett Field, a historic site and formerly a commercial airport for NYC. "New York's finest", the NYPD, use it now quite a lot for airborne ops.

They have recently post a later pic of LHR, with a nice shot of a VS 747-400 leaving gate 302 and I noticed the Concorde that was near the VAA maintenance hanger has gone in this later pic.

Here is the LAT/LON syntax

51 28'05.64" N 0 27'35.02" W

Copy and past into the search window.

Thanks Chuck!

Back to LHR, the picure i looked at yesterday definately has concord still in service!

The other interesting thing is the way the photo mosiacs are obviously made up:

There is a 737/a320 type landing on 09L, and at first sight it looks like a disaster is about to happen as there appears to be two ac already on the runway, and one just about to land. But on close inspection they look like the same aircraft, just taken a few seconds apart.

The two Concordes are, as you say, "in service" and on their gates at T4, the one I was refering two was over near the VAA maintenance hanger on the taxiway/service road in the earlier photo.

Great shot of an Air Canada aircraft near Bourne End here:
