Firefox 1.5 now out

Once you get used to Fx there really is no going back. When you are familar, you need to head over to the Extensions page and 'pimp' your Fx out with all the cool tools. Sounds a bit techy to start with but a lot of the extensions i could now not live without (ok, slight exaggeration, but you get my drift) FasterFox, AdBlock, NoScript, IETab, etc are all necessities

Any queries, feel free to blurt. I was introduced to Fx a few years back, having never used anything but IE or Netscape but i found that Fx really works for me as a browser and will happily sing its praises .. so much so that everyone in my office is FireFoxed!

Oooooooo. More new toys. Excuse me while I go and have a pimp.......Oh Dear! I eagerly downloaded and installed ImageBot - well, that didn't do what I expected it to at all - what a disapointment[}:)]

Is in the sense that the darn thing decided to update itself whilst i was in the middle of typing a reply on here, although Fx isnt comprised of closed source and untested code ... [:p] .. Oops [:p]

Wait untill he is out, change his settings to FF and watch his reaction :-)

I am sure there must be a skin available to make Firefox look like IE (but why you would want to is beyond me!)

Yes, why you would want to is beyond me too, but, slightly related, there is a function to allow you to view any page in an IE tab so you can see what it would look lie in IE

There are various themes that make FF look like Vista too, but they are not on the official page. I had the theme that made my desktop look like Windows 3.1 - and that really highlighted how far we have come since those days

Just been using a really good extension in FF that i thought id share for those who have not seen it yet:

Anipagination

Basically, you know all those threads that are spread across several pages, requiring you to click 'next page' too often? Antipagnation caches all of the pages together onto one page - you simply scroll down and read! Its really useful for V-Flyer (with all those multi-page threads) in addition to lots of other websites!

Got to love Vista and its new enhanced 3200+ GPO's where I can now restrict programs in even more granular detail - FF certainly will not be featuring on any of my machines. IE7 is great for my needs, oh and the corporate market, where we should say they are a little more security conscious; open source doesn't tend to bode too well for customers in that scenario.

Each to their own of course!

Sorry, fail to see the relevance of Vista's Group Policy Objects in this thread? Unless you mean that you planning to restrict which programs/browsers users on your domain are allowed to access?

If so, are you not in essence forcing users into using a sole range of programs by getting rid of the opposition? .. oh .. Oops!

As you say, IE7 is great for your needs, but you have to appreciate that the needs of users differ across the spectrum, dependant on abiilty, preferences and requirements, and IR7 does not fulfil the needs of all users.

Im merely pointing out some developments in the FF thread for FF users, if you want to post news about IE developments feel free to do so. Oh i guess they'll all be in here anyway so no need to split the topic

Not sure how long this has been around, but thought id share the love with my latest find ... if you are Google and FireFox dependant, this little gem (the Google Notebook) is a godsend.

We have been using it here in the office, its Linux and XP compliant, though you need FireFox 1.5 to run it (also works within IE) and its just fab, essentially its an online notebook to clip and collect text, images and URLS from the web, or just add your own text/reminders, and it all stays within your web browser, so accessible over HTTP at any time. You can share your notebook with your contacts (with varying privileges) so we are using it as a great collaborative developer resource.

I've dropped back to Firefox 1.0 (well, 1.06 if you want specifics), since the engine in 1.5 appears to break some things that used to work just fine in 1.0.

Darn! Like what? Anything major?

I have not had any issues so i am guessing it might be Mac related, did you download the 1.5.0.2 Universal Binary build? I know there was some issue with the Intel Macs not getting a full upgrade to 1.5.0.2.

If there is anything obviously AWOL let me know and i'll have a moan at my Mozilla buddies, see waht the score is

I have staretd using Firefox and I do enjoy the way it works - but some of my banking sites will not load properly on it so I have had to go back to IE6 for that.

Does anyone know if there is an update in the offing?

Let me know what sites and i'll see if there is a work around. Do you have NoScript installed/activated? (at the bottom right of your browser window where the padlock would appear on a HTTPS there should be a symbol with a blue 'S' on a white background) If so, you might just need to globally allow script for those sites.

Which version of Fx are you using?

Mozilla 1.7.13 is the latest official release, although there are several Alpha and Beta offerings for 1.8. If you are having any issues i'd stick to the RC as opposed to Beta

If you are at all unsure, you can go to Help > Check for Updates at the top of the browser window.
