This was also something that I'd wondered about - I'd known for a long time that economy was routinely overbooked, but wasn't sure about other classes. Think I'd be less than happy to be offered a downgrade - let's face it, most of us pay through the nose, to some extent or other, to fly with a bit more space, and I'm really not sure how I'd react to a request to downgrade me. Let you know if and when it ever does (and how much dosh it takes to make me accept)...[}:)]

This is an interesting thread, but now I have to ask,if booked on a G ticket and bumped down to coach, how would they find the value of the G ticket? use a Z rate?

I'd like to see anyone try and get my husband and his long legs into an economy seat - they'd need a hammer & chisel!! We just couldn't accept a downgrade from PE - it's physically impossible.

Good question Dave, but you wouldn't be bumped down from Upper to Economy. You will go down one class. If I recall, in this instance you would receive the mileage difference back, plus the normal compensation such as the green or red select voucher. The miles refund constitutes the fare refund element.

And a separate point, to help avoid all of this in the first place (even though it is rare), is to check in as soon as possible. If it gets to invol time, it is done in order of check in.

Thanks,
Richard

just for the re-assurance, in 12 years of flying with VS, I have only been asked once if I would voluntary downgrade - from UC to PE!

Given this was on a New York flight and I got the 50,000 miles select voucher, the triple airmiles that were on offer for UC at the time and the UC tier points it really was a no-brainer to accept.

Also, I guess morally, balanced against the number of Op-ups I has received from PE to UC on the MCO route, I felt it was more than fair.

Does it make any difference if you hold a Virgin Holidays PE ticket ? i.e. does VA know as your ticket is part of a holiday /flydrive and not a flexible fare that x number of 'H' class pax will definately show up.

Hi Alec,

I'm sure the guys and girls who predict the overselling ratio for a specific flight factor that in, yes. Along with regular non-flexible fares, I'm sure.

If the plane were full of fully-flex ticket holding passengers, I'd be a lot more tempted to oversell it than if they were all on Z/K & Q fares...
