Amex gold to green

Hi there,

I, like many, took out the amex gold offer for the 20k bonus miles. I was going to cancel the card but I got sucked into using it all the time for MR. Its due for renewal soon but I dont think it's worth the £95 so Im thinking of going down to green. (dont fall into Platinum salary range yet).

1. Does anyone know if I still get a discounted BA premium card with the green or is this just if you have the gold?

2. Does anyone actually have a green card these days?

3. Might it be worth hanging on for the 'new revised' gold that there's rumored to be?

4. If I cancel the gold and get the green will I be able to earn MR's in the same account?

Im sure a couple of amex guru's might be able to help?!

I'm not an Amex guru, but my Gold card - taken out for the same reason as yours - will bite the dust at the end of the first year.

If you want a card to collect FC points, then the VS '2 points per £' can't be beaten IMHO.

I thought that the Gold card was being replaced by the new red card, but ISTBC.

1. Yes, its still discounted. Do you have a Premium or Premium Plus BA Card? Gold card holders get a Premium FOC, but green card holders get it fee free for the first year and then £20/year. For Premium Plus, its £30/year if you ahve green or gold.

3. Maybe, but then there are other products up for a refresh too.

4. Yes, your MR accoutn number stays the same.

Hi Nick,

AmEx Red is not a replacement for Gold - I'm still trying to understand the logic behind Red as its a charity card and they are a dying breed.

I have a premium plus card which Ive only kept as I get it for £30 pa. I did have a virgin CC which was great but decided to swap it for the BMI platinum. Anyway, im feeding several FF accounts with MR so Id like to keep it. e.g. Delta, Continental, BMI and Virgin.

Richard, any idea when these revamps mght be made offically public? Might we be looking at weeks or months?

So is everyone else chucking in their AMEX Gold? I took it out too and have probably earned myself over 5000 miles in about a year in top of the 20,000. OK so that's cost me £95...I thought it was a good way to keep em rolling in. Especially considering Virgin wouldn't give me a card on account of me already having an MBNA card (are all the Virgin ones run by them?).

I don't want to give up the MBNA card cos the credit limit has grown pretty seriously since I had it, not that there's anything on it, but it's always there in case, well, I dunno, I wanna splash out on a new two-wheel trouble-maker!

Now here's a strange thing... I have an old lingering MBNA card, that i did some card surfing onto, and off of a few years back, then forgot to cancel it.
Then I did the same thing with the Virgin Card and will keep using (for obvious reasons), but just the other day I got a phone call from MBNA offering me yet another 0% transfer on the old (non virgin) card. So it obviously doesn't matter how many different brand cards you have with the same underlying company.

If you make an application by phone you can instruct MBNA to close your existing account open you a new Virgin MBNA account and transfer your credit limit. That is what I did.

LOL. It isn't a question of being tight, it depends on your spending habits. If you spend a lot on the card each month then IMHO, the fee is one of the biggest bargains in the financial world.

If you don't spend much on credit cards, then it isn't worth paying the fee, and the few FC points you do acquire should be looked upon as bonus points. [8D]

I agree with Nick.

The Virgin 2xmiles card is unbeatable in my book. We deliberatly use the card as much as possible then clear (most) of it off each month. Try it for a year and see the results!

I use my card most of my purchases as well, but i just don't agree on paying a fee for credit! ah well, when you're all flying of on your free flights I'll still be on the train going to work (paid for, ofcourse, with my card!)! [:p]

I certainly don't believe in paying a fee for credit, or paying interest on my account. I look upon the fee as paying for the extra FC points that go into my account over a 12 month period and, believe me, it is a SMALL price to pay. [8D]

I ditched my Gold after the first year when they wouldn't agree a further MR bonus. Good idea on switching cards PatrickJ77, might give that a try [y]

No Problem, As Nottingham Nick said it is a small price. You could:
1)Think about how much you have spent over the past year.
2)Then compare how many points you would have got for the GBP95.00

A word of warning though..... Check the interest rate if you dont clear your balance each month as this could increase the monthly interest (not sure of the interest rates).

I'm in the same boat with the amex gold but I have discoveed another little wrinkle - I have a corp Amex that does not pay MR - it does now! On registration I was asked if I had any other amex cards and I declared the corp card - the corp card is now popping a nice load of MR points into my private card account!
BTW - what will happen when its renewal time - will amex try and get £95 out of me or do you think I'll get the Platinum hard sell?

I have just canceled my Amex card.. They tried to offer my 1.5 points (and a year free) and then asked if I was interested in Platinum.. I have been canceling my cards as I have just left London.. The only one I am keeping is my Virgin MBNA!!
