Just read with much delight that Virgin will be sponsoring the 1990 FA Cup rematch. And all to raise quid for leukemia research.

WELL DONE, SRB!!! To think that Virgin are sponsoring the opportunity for Sir Alex to lead his team onto the pitch fills me with great pride (and yes, I am an EDUCATED footballer...).

Was wondering -- will any of my fellow V-Flyers be attending the match at Selhurst? You could stop off on your way to Gatwick [:p] Alas, I will be stuck in the states on 06/4.

(Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but I did a search for "FA Cup" and nothing came up and it didn't really seem like a "news bit").

I wish I could be, I had the good fortune to be a guest of VS for a couple of games during that glorious cup run. And an emotional day at Wembley for the final, Ian Wright coming back from a broken leg to score 2 in the final - the stuff dreams were made of ,(couldnt make the replay as I was at a company conference - not that I missed much [:(] )

Im not a Palace or United fan....(more a merseyside Red) but did apply for some of the tickets on offer to staff but they sold out. Lets hope it raises lots of money though

The intention might have been good to raise money for the charity, but by doing this with THAT team, I will now not be spending any more money with Virgin.

IMHO that is FAR more important than any pathetic, parochial football rivalries that may exist.

If VS sponsoring a charity football match causes you to stop flying with them, then I feel sorry for you.

I couldn't agree more, the small mindedness of some football 'fans' truly astonishises me a times. [?][V]

I think this match is a brilliant idea but the fact it is to raise money for chrity makes it all the better.

There are plenty of charities out there with as much a worthy cause as this one.
I susbscribe monthly to one. They chose to play that team, then that is their choice, the same as it is mine.

However, I don't think I'd go to the extent of saying I'll "not be spending any more money" with Tesco (for example) just because I don't particularly agree with their sponsorship of an individual charity such as Whizz-Kids. (Bearing in mind, it is a charity, after all... - for clarity, I don't disagree with it, either )

I choose who to donate my money to, if at all - but I'm not sure I'd cut my nose off to prove a point to the extent that you're claiming...

Whilst not agreeng that I am cutting off my nose etc.. I have done the same before, with the biycott of Vodafone and changed the companies mobile phone supplier for the reason of their sponsordhip of them.
Virgin sponsoring Palace is not a problem, nor Samsung with Chelski, just for reasons I won't go into on here,That team is different.

Virgin used to be without doubt, my preferred choice of airline to fly the Atlantic, but this has been getting less and less as the years have gone by as they have failed to improve on economy, turning it into a worse service than some charter airlines, and the diminution of PE as well as the perceived attitude to the B & S routes beings second class to Buisness routes. This is just the cherry on the top, giving That team publicity.

As I siad, its my choice. I have made my views clear, i do not expect, like other matters for people to agree with me, again, that is our rights in a democracy. So I will not comment any further on this matter,

Sorry - but it gets a bit silly not buying or using a product because that compnay sponsors or supports a particular football team - I know people do it but I just cant get to grips as to why?

Supporting your team is something you for life - players and managers move from team to team, sponsors change, even the ground can move - but come what may we support our team.

I go to the match on a Staurday ( if Sky havent messed the time about!) I support my team and I hope we win - sure I will give out some stick to the opposition, their fans and probabl;y also to the ref - but come 4.45 when the game is over I go home - Im fed up if we lose but I dont bear a grudge about the other team or their fans or their sponsors.

What happens if you buy a product from a company and then they start sponsoring your bitterest rivals?

I am surprised, Alan, that you intend to never fly VS again. That's correct isn't it? Manchester United must have done something truly awful to you or your family for you to take that view.

If BA decide on a similar linkup in the future, will you consign yourself to charter destinations only in the future? Or take a LCC flight into Europe and pick up one of the European longhaul carriers? Doesn't such action hurt the UK economy though, something I would expect you disapprove of?

It's difficult to do what you want to do in life, if one takes such a strong view on things such as this.

I personally dont agree with sport being sponsered by alcohol companies but I have little say in my club being sponsered by Carlsburg! like wise when they used to be sponsered years ago by Crown paints would that have made me buy a Crown paint pot even though they didnt have the exact colour I wanted?

Will this mean Alan wont be supporting the 2012 Olympics? becasue both BA and Virgin are behind these games? I believe that everyone has a right to show their opinions however when it comes to a Charity event it seems silly, I once boycotted a large food company because they were doing something in the third world which was an ethics reason.... I cant stand Man Utd but I wont stop using Vodafone because at the moment they give me the best deal for my needs.

Alan you say that you feel that the Virgin Economy product has been deteriating over time, which to some extent I would agree however looking at world events All the airlines have made sacrifices..
Its very hard to keep innovating when the budgets are much lower, maybe its not so much deteriated but others have caught up?

some of the charters have not faced the same competition as those of scheduled airlines, And when competeing on the north atlantic neither do british airlines have protection against bankruptcy like the Chapter 11 in the US... does not really make it fair playing field

However I have seen plans for the Economy service and products and Im sure when it is launched it will restore faith in Virgins ability to keep ahead... we have already heard how the seat pitch is changing on the A346 and new seats as a result of customer feedback and also one of the youngest aircraft fleets.. Then of course one thing other airlines dont have and that is overall one of the best cabin staff.

But I guess Im digressing from the footbal subject but I dont think there is anything wrong with a british airline supporting a british event for charity!

This is a charity thing. I wonder if AlanA has checked out all the companies that takes boxes at Old Trafford, run commercials on MUTV, have ads run on TV during their games, and in any other way have contributed to the coffers of Manchester United.

I can not imagine MU plc gaining a jot from this venture, in fact it may even cost them.

OK, it MIGHT be more cost effective for VS to not bother putting on the match at all and give all the cash straight to the Geoff Thomas fund, but I suspect the leverage gained from ticket sales, donations on the night, merchandise and so on will make the total raised far higher.

Football is NOT more important than life and death. It's a game, that many of us love, and that fills many an hour of sofa, TV and bar talk. Why not provide us with more to talk about.

I am a Man Utd fan living in the Yorkshire area. Between 1987 - 1994 I went to almost every game home & away. Since 1994 I have just been to a handful of games. Once I turned 21 years old (1994 - after we won the double ) I realised there were far more inportant things in life (thankfully Barcelona 1999 - 25th May was one of those games I attended since 1994). I make no bones about the fact I used to dislike scousers (Liverpool fans), followed by Arsenal and then City but it. Leeds lumbered in lower down the pile simply cos they have never acheived anything but they were there cos for some reason they always thought we were rivals????. At the end of the day though, for me, and most of my fellow fans it was all just a bit of banter and fun.

The bottom line is this match is a fantastic idea and a fund raising idea to boot. OK, some people may not want to give to that charity (I have other charities I would prefer to give to for very personal reasons) but at the end of the day we should be giving a big thumbs up to virgin for coming forward and putting their weight behind this and raising more money through their involment than other low key key companies may have done.

Ok then folks, I think we've digressed enough on this thread Can we now leave the football rivalries aside and get back to the original topic please?

While I understand football raises high spirits, I suggest these remain on the terraces and on football forums. A site focused on VS is no place for inter-team rivalry.
