Spraying Time

having recently travelled from CPY and JGC and am fascinated as to why the crew have to spray the plane pre departure. It strikes me as being very amusing and the crew seem to think it is very funny as well?

I always used to get sprayed on flights going into China, even pre SARS, but that seems to have stopped of late. It does seem a bit strange spraying for travel within the same country. Was it pesticide or Lynx?

We can be a little pedantic here;);).
JGC is Johannesburg Grand Central Airport.
The International Aiport is JNB. :D

Having said that, I have never been to South Africa, so can't answer your question. [:I]

Didn't it used to be DDT that they sprayed?

Something about when they stopped using that in '96, it caused an increase in Malaria around SA?

The only time I've experienced having the A/C cabin sprayed was on arrival in the Maldives a few years ago.

Flights are sprayed to get rid off insects and other nasty things that could bring over mosquitoes, tstetse flies etc. that could bring over malaria etc.
BTW, Nick you really must try out JNB/CPT!:D

All being well SA will be the first stop on our Great Escapade, which is currently pencilled in for late next year / early '08. [8D][8D]

Had a great time in SA year and a half ago - Safari, diving with Great Whites, fantastic scenery and fantastic foods - and great service evrywhere we went. And to cap it all no jet lag!!!!

They used to spray you before you got of the aircraft in SYD, but it has been..... oh, about 20 years or so since I last went so I don't know if they do it anymore.

Not come across any insectide spraying on the last month flying the following itinerary: LHR-SIN-PER-MEL-SYD-BNE-AKL-WLG-BHE-WLG-AKL-SFO.

I know that some crews were concerned about their repeated exposure to it - in most cases, there's usually some sort of neurotoxin in pesticides - and I think that has led to a reduction in spraying.

IIRC we got sprayed returning to LHR from Bangkok about 12 years ago. We may have also been done on the outbound to Singapore.

MH seem to love spraying... 7-8 tins of the stuff get emptied on an LHR-KUL sector in all classes, last took the route approx 9-10 months ago... Don't know if this has changed since?

We were sprayed on approach to DEL from LHR and as we left DBX for LHR, but not when we left DEL for DBX.... very strange [:?]

About 18months ago we did a number of flights with Air NZ and the cabin was sprayed on arrival at LAX (from LHR), on arrival at AKL from LAX and again on arrival at NAN from AKL. They told us it was to kill off insects from the previous country.

They do say that some people can be affected by it even with limited exposure so I don't know how it is for crew?[:?]

A friend of mine used to fly to see her folks in Oz - she once mentioned that, on landing in Oz, the plane was always sprayed. Must be going back around 15 years here - I'd never heard of it before, but apparently it was routinely done.
