Today a flight from Tehran came into approach at BHX and was at 600 feet 6 miles out from the runway.

It scared a farmer and his cattle - but worse than that could have creashed if the pilot had carried on with his approach.

Cant rememeber the name of the airline but it was an Airbus aircraft.

Apparently ATC had to shout at the pilot to tell him to climb and even then he still had to have 2 attempts at landing.

At Brum they dont have the ILS system working properly so the pilots cannto do what are called "precise" landings - so they work off beacons to land and their altimeter and calculations in the head or on paper.

An expert on Radio 5 said that a plane should drop at 300 feet for every mile out - so he should have been at around 1800 feet.

The aircraft has been impounded and flight recorder removed!!

Thanks for the interesting info, Mark. Think I will steer clear of that airport then!

I wish I could but I am about 6 miles from BHX under the flight path. And before I get asked, no I am not a farmer and no I did not get a fright today!!

Its about 6 miles from where I live, did not see or hear it.
Its quite funny that currently BHX is trying to stop expansion at Coventry as it could have a dangerous effect on the BHX flight paths.....

Quote from the earlier BBC link:

It looked like it was only 200 to 300 feet up as it nearly hit the straw stack.

Wow! They build their haystacks big in Birmingham!

And I live in Solihull - come on guys - lets form the "Midlands Chapter" - v-flyer is always geared around things "darn sarf" ( even tho I am from it) so how about dinner and a few drinks on Broad Street or a something like Malt Shovel at Barston?

Any thoughts guys?

Of course I doubt I would be able to make it as I can't seem to make the London ones either [:I]

I think the residents of Windsor would be very unhappy if a plane landing at LHR was just 600m above them.;)

Dave - Im a bit disappointed to say the least!!!!

Its not that you have admitted to not managing to make the London events but to the fact that you have given up before even trying!! I vote that we make you the honorary President of the Midlands Chapter and that you will therefore just have to try a teensy weensy bit harder to get here so that we can buy you copious amounts of fine English Beer!!!

So what do you and your softee rides up that tower say to that - eh?

Are there that many of us 'darn sarf' as Mark puts it, then? I thought you were all North of the border i.e. London!

Maybe we should have our own boozy sesh?!
