Just seen the 500 error

500 ERROR
Oops! An error occured trying to retrieve the page you requested.

An error 500 means the server screwed up while processing your request. It may be a temporary thing, or it could be just plain old sloppy coding. Give it another try, and if you see this message again, pop a message in the forums and I'll take a large hammer to the server.

Fantastic humour!

Hmm... Seems to be related to going straight to, or editing, one of the more recent (last 30 mins) posts... [:?]

I have tried about 30 times to reply to this post. [:(!][:(!] Kept getting the 500 error. I have closed Firefox down and started again... so far so good.

I have noticed quite a few 500 errors over the past couple of weeks, usually when doing a forum search. Each time, I have re-p;osted and there hasn't been a problem.... until tonight.

Looks like we're currently the target of a spambot from Africa, which is sucking a fair bit of bandwidth. Not much I can do about it until it realises it has no success posting then moves on. Ah well...

Aren't you able to block its IP address, or does it appear to be using dial-up?

It's coming from a dynamic range. Could be a virus-style attack.

Could that explain why my broadband access was either pitifully slow or down for most of last night also? [:(]

Ditto. Damn spybots. Glad you IT guys managed to get rid of the last rash which were giving us all the "system unavailables"

I've seen a few of these today, but that doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the risk that you may have copyrighted that perfectly crafted 500 message, as I really would like to adopt it on my own network.

That's just too funny! [y]

When that has bitten me, I have copied the message to the clipboard before posting just as a safeguard.

I always hit preview before posting, so if it does error, you have a copy of what you typed :D Useful for the longer posts!

Yes, unfortunately we're outgrowing the server again. Just to popular for our own good. The biggest problem is V-Flyer doesn't generate enough funds to justify a dedicated server just yet; but that's what it needs.

I'm looking into the problem, though, and hope to have some kind of solution to it in the near future.

I'm getting this error a lot [B)], trying to log in, clicking on 'Forums', posting replies etc

Do you think it's trying to tell us we're all addicts?! I was accused of being obsessed with this site the other day [:I]

Ditto that Jacq, its been a real pain the past couple of days!

Can i get in line to bash the server into shape? ... or help get it something better to run on? [B)]

Thanks,
Sarah

Now where did I put that Pi–ata stick?!! [:(!]

I just found that when I used 'quick reply' at the bottom on one thread, it actually worked without me having to hunt the stick or use any expletives! :)

And it just worked for this (edited) so there's a way round it for now...hopefully! [:?]

The worst example of repeated 500 errors is, without doubt, when doing a forum search.

I have found that if you restrict the search - either to a single forum - or to the last 60 or 120 days, then it cuts down on the number of error messages. It doesn't eliminate them completely though. [:#]
