Transit Questions

Has anyone had experience of Transitting to another international flight through either PVG or NRT.
I guess Japan has walk-in visas for UK citizens, so transitting isn't a problem, but I am never clear on the rules for transitting through Shanghai. Do you even need to clear immigration to make an international connecting flight.

Yeah I know, from my user name I should know shouldn't I? But in the past I've had a residence permit, and only ever connected to domestic flights!

I've connected through NRT, on the way from LHR to ICN and I don't recall passing through Japan immigration.

Last October, I travelled to ICN via NRT & I definitely had to go through Immigration at NRT. Nice polite officers though.

IIRC You have to collect your luggage, clear immigration, the works at PVG. If you recall when you get of the plane the guards direct you immidiately to health screening and then onto immigration - there is no choice.

Yes,I think you are right for PVG, I've never seen any indication of a Transit route.
If I understood the visa requirements correctly you can get a walk in transit visa that allows you to stay in the Shanghai area for 24hours so long as you are in Transit, though i wouldn't fancy my chances of trying to explain this to the Immigration officers!

Interesting. I stand to be corrected but don't remember going through immigration. Details of international connections at NRT are here:

and there's no mention of goinf through immigration. In fact, at the bottom of the page is a nmention that you will need to get a special pass to leave the airport. Implies that if you don't want to leave tha airport, you don't need one.

Maybe it was because the flights were on different airlines, I flew LHR-NRT with VS and NRT-ICN with Korean Airlines. There were no connecting flight desks staffed, and I was steered toward Immigration. I'm pretty sure that my baggage was through checked but I cannot remember for certain. I am certain that I went through Immigration though because I have a fancy sticker in my passport.

Hmmm. The plot thickens. My flights were VS LHR->NRT and then Asiana NRT->ICN. I've been through my passport and I can find the Korean immigration stamp for the trip but I have no Japan immigration sticker so I definitely didn't go through immigration at NRT. I remember having to change terminals as well so all that must have happened airside.
