Hong Kong - MTR Advice

Right I'm starting to get organised for my HKG/SYD trip as is now a little over 2 weeks away

As I'm over-nighting both ways in HKG I'm going to be using the Airport Express/MTR to get to my hotel in HKG. Using the same hotel in HKG for both stop-overs each way to/from SYD.

The hotel I've chosen in HKG is close to the Causeway Bay MTR station so I need to get on the Airport Express to Hong Kong station and then Central station to Causeway Bay station.

The only thing I can't work out is how to get from Hong Kong station to Central station [:?]

My other question, as I'll probably be buying one of those Airport Express Tourist Octopus cards, is can you buy these from the airport before getting on the Airport Express [:?]

Uh... Hong Kong station and Central station are (almost) the same station [8D]

They're at opposite ends of the same complex, which, incidentally, has the 6th biggest building in the world on top of it. Hong Kong station is on the Airport Express and Tung Chung lines, and Central station is on the Island and Tsuen Wan lines - there's a maybe 5 minute walk between them, mostly on two travelator type things.

The main thing to be careful of - not necessarily in your case, but it's bitten me a couple of times - is that they have duplicate exits, i.e. they both have an exit A, an exit B and so on, so if you're going to meet someone at an exit, make sure you know which one it really is...

Also worth noting that if you're near Times Square in CWB, there's quite a walk from where the train stops to the exit - it's a pretty sprawling station with lots of tunnels.

And I'm 95% sure you can get the tourist octopus cards at the airport - I never actually bought a card, since a friend gave me a spare before I moved out here, a spare which happens to be a tourist card

Yes, as you leave the baggage hall, there is a MTR desk there that are very helpful - you can buy your tourist card thre. You then walk through the doors into the arrival hall and go straight forward and you will find the Airport Express.

Check the link that HoneyLamb supplied as there are a number of free hotel shuttles from various MTR stations. I walked from the station to the Mandarin Oriental as it wasn't that far away.

vmlinuz - Yes it is the Times Square exit (exit A) I will be using out of the Causeway Bay station as I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Express hotel near by. Looking at the maps, like you say, exit A is a long way from the station - good job my luggage has wheels

The Tourist Octopus card includes 3 days travel on the MTR, with the first day starting the first time of use. So, if you are just overnighting (is there such a verb?) you will lose 2 days.

Ive just arrived back this morning from HKG .... something worth adding .... if you are travelling in a group of 2+ you get a discount on the purchase of your airport express tickets if purchased from the desk at the same time.

To be honnest I'd just get the train into Central then a Taxi... it would cut out alot of walking and taxis are pretty cheap over there.

One hint, try to get the name of your hotel in Cantonese Type, alot of taxi drivers don't understand much english so showing them the name avoids confusion (the number of times they've tried to take me to the wrong Shangri La!).. email the hotel for this.

Right next to the Airport Express ticket desk is the Tourist Information Desk. Pick up a map and ask them to write the name of your hotel in Cantonese on the map, then just show it to the taxi driver.

James, I'll be able to give you a "live" report on the journey this Saturday/Sunday as I too am arriving on the 200 then going to the HIX Causeway Bay!

There is also Airport express buses which are complimentary from the train station to many hotels.

Its worth getting a the free bus if you dont want to get the taxi.
