Jul 18 - 21

Jul 26 - 28

Base Backpackers. The Hilton of hostels. (Don't mean to be rude but also helps younger people appreciate how luckly they are or atleast it did for me.) Worth getting a tour atleast. Pretty cool, new and trend bar attach. I met a bucnh of cool people. Speed dating on Wednesday was cool. I like hostels for nights I will not be in the room much. Silly to pay for something you do not use.

The Hilton Sydney is nice. I stayed there too. Morden. Fozzy/Wolves did a great review. Near a bunch of shopping and near Circular Quay.

Not cheap but the Park Hyatt is the best location in town IMHO. Right under the bridge with prefect views of the Opera House. I would do it. Wish I did.

Anycase, the CBD is not far from the airport. Maybe a 15-20 minute train ride or 25 minute cab.

Also there's Blue, Woolloomooloo Bay (which it what used to be the W Sydney) which look very nice as well.

HL for something a little different yet very central and close to most things - try The Harbour Rocks hotel. As the name implies, its right in the heart of the Rocks area and a very pleasant hotel with lots more "character" than the Shangri-la.

An alternative would be to spend the two nights in the Blue Mountains which is reached easily by train from Sydney via a very scenic journey.

Hope you have a great trip[y]

Ben, without wishing to seem rude, I can assure you my backpacking and hostel days are well and truly behind me

I had thought of the Park Hyatt but it seemed too near where I had stayed on the first few days in Sydney, but I'll look again

Er, shoreside, my trip to Leura is in the Blue Mountains where we are spending two nights [:w]

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. [y] I'll look into them when I get a chance.

I would recommend the Rendezvous Stafford hotel in the Rocks district, although its more of a flat than a standard hotel room, as it has a small kitchen with fridge and cooker, but has full hotel service, and a lovely pool, where you can sit outside in the morning for the complimentary breakfast! Reasonable prices, and great location!

It is very close to the Shangri-La which is close to the bridge climb start point. The Hilton is nice but lacks views. There is The Quays on the other side of Circular Quay closer to the Opera House. IIRC Decker has given the [y] to this property in the past. Looked nice walking by.

Anycase, let us know what you pick.

I used to work at the Stafford. It's a small hotel with 6 floors, located extremely close to Circular Quay. The top floors offer the best views of the Opera House. Some even have outdoor balconies. The larger rooms have 2 bedrooms. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, (which aren't very special),lounge with sofa bed and a kitchenette with microwave. The gym is tiny (so's the pool). Continental breakfast is the only meal served in the hotel, but plenty of restaurants nearby.

What's unigue about this hotel is that they offer 2 floor cottage-style apartments called The Terraces. They have full kitchen facilites and dining tables as well.

We loved it when we stayed, and there are SOOOO many great places to eat nearby, and if you're at the end of the holiday, there is a laundrette there too (DIY, of course)[^]

Apols for my ignorance HL[:I]. Although I've been to Oz several dozen times Leura is a new one to me![:?].
You could try Port Stephens as I've heard there is a rather good hotel there by the water and the area is good for dolphin watching.

We got a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge at the Hilton, just.... :)
It seems to have had quite a bad rap since reopening but I was pleasantly surprised with the place. Good central location if nothing else. But try and get a high floor.

cheers!
