I too will be enrolling during my IAD to DXB layover.
Just registered for IRIS, took about 5 mins. They examine your passport to check eligibility, then you sit at one of the two desks.
Stare into a metal box, making sure that your irises (irisii??) are lined up with the two green dots and say cheese!
If you're wearing glasses, you have to take these off for the picture. They then take a standard digital picture and then verify the iris picture.
They also give you a sheet of paper with you personal details (as they have been stored on their system) eg name, date of birth, passport number and ask you to check these are correct.
The other freebie you get is an Arrival Card detailing how to use the system when you arrive into the UK - basically you enter the pod thing when prompted, there are three cameras inside and the relevant one will light up and that's the one you give your best moody stare at. If Mr Blair is happy that you are allowed in, the exit door will open - if not, presumably lights will flash, klaxons will sound and a troop of security men/women will surround you.
One interesting thing is that the validity of IRIS is two years but it's a rolling two years from the time of last entry into the UK. It's pretty unlikely that anyone (here at least!) would let their 'membership' lapse.
I've not heard anything about the IRIS data being used outside UK (perhaps within EU, free borders notwithstanding) - does anyone know about this?

I'll sign up when I pop up to Manchester next month.
It sounds slightly different to Privium where you keep your iris scan on a smart card, and no one else has access to it. If you lose the card, you need a new scan.
Anything that helps reduce the queues is always welcome though!

Used IRIS re-entering the UK today through T3.
Quick and painless, though I did get asked to "move a little closer, please" by the camera, so that my eyes lined up properly.
(Ironically, there was no queue at the EU entry line at about 10.35 this morning either...)
There's no need to swipe passports or anything before entering the IRIS booth.
While they take the capture with glasses off, the entry scan can be done with glasses on.

I noticed the information about Iris scanning on the Virgin website today but cannot find any information about where abouts you to to get this done.
I understand from reading this thread that it is available at Manchester, but is it available at all terminals or just one particular area where you sign up, and is it during certain times only. Also is it suitable for children.
Having seen the queue when we landed in May from MCO, it would have been lovely to bypass all that but obviously if my daughter cannot use the service there's not much point in us having it done as she always travels with us.

There's a small link at the bottom of the VS page which takes you here. Its got all the details about where in each airport the IRIS registration takes place!

They will probably tell you to use a smaller bag and not to carry tablets that might be made of Gel, will lose your luggage and generally make a balls of answering your question.
