If 100-110 degrees is "not too hot", then you'll be fine... [:w]

Well I wouldn't say 100-110..more like 110-120.

Do what everyone else does, hide indoors during the day, shopping, eating, gambling, then hit the streets at night when it drops into the 90's.

Just remember no matter what to drink lot's of water.

I have been to Vegas (and Phoenix) in August a couple of times and, yes, it is HOT. However it is a dry heat (being in a desert :D ) and I didn't find is as oppressive as I find the Florida heat, where the temperatures are lower, but the humidity levels are much higher.

The casinos and shops all have great air con as well. [8D][8D]

I would do Vegas first, and then fly home from SFO.

Thanks for the replies - does it cool down much into September or just as warm, wasn't expecting 110 degrees - it sounds uncomfortable!

It's not to uncomfortable, the problem is as Nick say's,it's a dry heat,so yes while you feel warm you don't feel hot, hence my tip of drinking plenty of water because you can dehydrate without even knowing it.

Sept is cooler than Aug,but the temp can still get up there.

Hmm.. what's it going to be like in November?

[I'm flying in and out of SFO, but spending four days in LAS at a conference - allegedly!]

October last year was in the 80s and very pleasant! But August - well, as everyone here's already said, it's a dry but intense heat. You really can't spend more than a nanaosecond outside without your brains frying, so stick to the popping in and out of air conditioning, and drink plenty (water!) and use the misting too - first time I saw that, I just couldn't believe it....[:I]

I first saw it in Palm Springs - I did a double take, as I wasn't quite sure just what I was looking at.

It'd never catch on in the UK.. [:p]

OT, but misters are big in Palm Springs too! Someone told me that misters lower the air temp twenty degrees.

For anyone who reads Tom Clancy - he used a plot line that was going to use the misting at the Sydney Olympics to spread a virus around the world -( which thankfully never happened- Ok so its only a story ) - and I can remember misters at the Luxor back in 1996/7??

Some of the misters used to be on the street outside a number of the hotels. Didn't notice any back in April, but it was only in the 90's then.

I'd acclimatise by heading out to Death Valley for a spell. Any temperature in Vegas is cool after that. I swear the hairs on my legs were shrivelling in the heat. Always puts me in mind of that TShirt with the two skeletons, one of which is saying "Well, at least it's a dry heat".

Neil - if you can adopt a nocturnal lifestyle, August in Vegas would probably be good value as room rates are low. If, however, you have family in tow and can't timeshift like that it could prove a challenge.

Been to Vegas in August a couple of times before and will be there again this year :D.

As has been said, make sure to drink plenty of water and don't try to walk the length of the strip in one go and you'll be fine.

I'd take Vegas in the 100's anyday over the UK in the 80's as they are geared up for temps like that - air con everywhere that matters.

Whatever date you decide upon, hope you have a great time [y]

Oh and would def fly back from San Francisco - unless it suits you better to arrive back at Gatwick of course

Thanks for all the replies - just one more quickie if I may - Am I best to fly LHR-SFO and then do a couple of internals to LAS as if I fly direct to LAS then would mean flying ex Gatwick and then the flight back from SFO would be into LHR (not good me thinks!) - are the internal flights expensive/regular etc etc....??

I know its OT but hey if you don't ask you don't get :D[y]

Thanks,
Neil :)

Yes - we have booked a flight from MCO to Key West - but as Paul says its worth checking prices as there are some great deals from SFO or LAX to LAS. I would call VH and ask them to quote you first and then have a look on the web.

Just a quick point on luggage - I read that if you have one through ticket and your bags are checked through then the baggage weight limit of the originating airline still holds good on the onward flight. Therefore if you book a separate ticket and have to re-check your bags then you have to check them at the onward airlines limit -which could present a problem as the internal airline will likely have a lower limit than the VS flight - I think this is right but others may be able to correct me if not!
