We are flying into LAS next month, then driving up through death valley, yosemite and lake tahoe followed by a long weekend in SFO. We have then booked single tickets with America West back to LAS (£53 per person which seems quite reasonable to me) before a few nights in LAS and then back to LGW.

Expecting it to be pretty hot!

We took a similar route (save for the Tahoe bit) a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. The only downside was having to keep the aircon off when going up the long inclines into / out of Death Valley.

I did Vegas and SF combination last year end July/Aug and Vegas was unbearably hot but we managed just about (have been in April and October before and much nicer - wouldn't go in July again). However, in SF we had to go and buy jackets and sweatshirts as it was very cold in the evenings at Fishermans Wharf.

We booked the trip through VH and they booked our internal flight from Vegas to SF on America West (so got some airmiles for that flight too).

Thanks for everyones advice, good to know lots of people will be able to help me out nearer the time as im likely to have lots more questions!! I think we are going to try and delay until at least mid September, hopefully it will be slightly cooler than August!

We were there last year in late Sept - Pretty much perfect I'd have said - Perhaps a little too hot during the days but really pleasant in the evenings

my preferred times of the year has got to be mid april, and also early oct - warm and sunny - nights okay

but even in summer - with all the ac - you can pop in and out of hotels, restaurants etc - no problem. And after 10pm - its great weather - hey why not just spleep all day and party all night!

wintertime - i think is the time to avoid!
