I have to say the one and only time I've arrived at LAS from the UK (last years V-Flyer Vegas bash), it was very quick and we were through immigration and baggage reclaim within 20mins of landing [y]

That has by far been the quickest US international arrival I've ever had.

Cannot comment on international departure as I've never flown home from LAS.

Dave,
Congrats to LAS, although I think that in some important ways this huge, modern airport is already a victim of the city's burgeoning popularity. When someone figures out how to untangle the queues of vehicles outside the terminal and the queues of people at the ticket counters, and the lines at the security checkpoint, they will certainly earn my respect. IMO this is the one negative aspect of an otherwise very cool airport. Has there been any discussion of what to do about this problem?

Regards,
Chuck-

Yes there has, they are in the planning stages for a new airport out at Jean, also they are building a new terminal which sjould take some of the pressure of the main terminal.

McCarran has its good points and bad - like all airports - it can get easily overcrowded - especially peak times at terminal 2.

we always checkin and then head straight to terminal 1.

its much better - you can go through security (check lines first obviously), and then eat and drink in comfort - i know that means going thru security twice, but its worth it - also the nascar bar, before security, is the place we tend to hang out.

terminal 2 - unfortunately virgin do tend to get the poorly equipped terminals. although they have remodelled the bar - its even smaller than before. and all you have to eat is burger king and pizza hut - and burger king does close quite early if its a quite time. so you may just be left with factory made pizza.

I think that one of the wonderful advantages of McCarran is its proximity to the Strip - Im assuming this will change with a new development? ( if and when!!)

The international terminal is pretty bleak, when the new terminal is built (foundation going in now) international will move to there which will greatly improve matters, who know's maybe even a clubhouse [^],this is supposed to open in 2008.

Of course thing's have been known to change out here, but with the airline traffic growing at the rate it is and the disire of the hotels and LVCC to bring more direct international traffic in something will need to be done.

didnt know re moving term 2 stuff to the new terminal.

thats great news, thanks.

just have to put up with the mad dash from terminal 1 to 2, for a little while longer. Yep, we always leave terminal 1 toooo late, in a rush for the flight.... i blame 'strong' beer!:D

Thanks, Dave. I too did not know that a new airport is planned. Jean would be approximately a half hour's drive from the Strip?

bit unsure re the new airport stuff

is the airport at Jean the 'future master planned airport' - and will be ready in like 10 years time ? (werent they also going to have like a bullet train or something?)

and is the new international terminal (the one Dave mentions) - a new development at the existing maccarran ?

That would be the place, the bullet train idea was floated a while back, but I have not heard anything about it in a while.

As you come into land on 25R the new terminal is supposed to go in the lot at the far north east corner of the airport next to the cargo area.

From what I have heard the new internation terminal will be part of the new terminal above.

I just took a look at wikipedia and they make no mention of the international flights going to the new terminal,I will have a hunt around and check with my sources to confirm this.

Jean's an easy drive into Vegas, from recollection. McCarran is almost on-site - well, I know it isn't, but it feels that way.

Thanks Dave.

re Jean - Jean is an easy drive - but imagine it on a holiday weekend!! And for those of us who have homes in Vegas - it can still take a good 40 minutes (depending on which part of town) to get to Maccarran so wouldnt like another 30-40 minutes on top of that.

Bit confused now anyway - is the future airport at Jean many years away? and different from the new terminal Dave mentions above that is opening soon?

Is this correct ? [?]

Yes the airport in Jean and the new terminal are two separate things...If I could figure out how to do it I would post the google earth shot of LAS,it show pretty clearly where the new terminal is going.

However thanks to A'Net here is a pic of the airport,on the far right hand side of the picture you will see a cleared lot,my understanding is that that is where terminal 3 is going.

As was said the idea of an airport out at Jean sounds good, but on a holiday weekend it is going to be a nightmare

Dave,
Knowing "the powers that be" in Vegas I would not be at all surprised to see a monorail extension or something of that sort, on a straight line from Jean. And then everything between Jean and the Strip will get developed as well. Perhaps even in my lifetime.

The only problem with a monorail is the speed, maglev is what I was hearing, but who know's???

Of course when it comes to monorail's the one in Vegas has it's own problems,of course the planners and the powers that be didn't listen to anyone when it was pointed out that the majority of tourists will never use it because it is so off the beaten path.

mmm stupid monorail!!

what a waste - especially with cat introducing the 'tourist friendly' deuces

wouldnt mind a little monorail between the terminals tho at maccarran!!

so can visit all the bars in comfort summer and winter!!:D

And, of course, what other airport has you leap off the plane (well, maybe not leap!), bleary-eyed, to be confronted immediately by fruit machines.....

One huge + for LAS airport is the fact that it offers free wireless Internet access EVERYWHERE. [y]

If only others would do the same... [:I]

My latest trips in and out of Vegas (24th Sep) and 1st Octhave left me totally underwhelmed. In the first case, got through immigration just fine, even had friendly officer, only to get to customs and be sent back - because said friendly customs officer hadn't stamped my customs form! Talk about trivia... the second was far more annoying - having checked in online (why is it so difficult to find internet access on the strip after 5pm?), did the bag drop fine, only to then be sent back outside the building to join the line snaking around outside and inside the building. Reason for this? Only a few at a time were being allowed up the escalator to security. It took forever. Just to make it all perfect, there are screens up giving advice, amongst which is something advising you not to make jokes with the staff! And just how many times do I need to be asked if I have any gels and so on with me????

Come on Vegas airport - and also other US airports no doubt - try treating passengers with a little humanity, rather than looking at us as cattle.... I might just not bother flying again... [}:)]
