The layover at LHR is actually influenced by connection time and stand availability at LAX.
The benefit of the longer layover at LHR means that delays are more easily absorbed, and there is time to sort any minor mechanicals out during the layover - both minimise delays on the return flight.
Interestingly, ANZ have said that they want to be able to "resize" NZ1/2 as appropriate once the LHR-HKG-AKL starts up - this means that during the off-season, you can expect to see the 777-200ER more often at LHR.
The NZ38/39, via HKG, are definitely booked for the 744, and obviously this will take care of the pax who don't want to transit through the US, which may mean slightly lighter loadings on NZ1/2.
This will free up the 744s to allow upgauging of other routes where demand is high, such as SFO, where the booked 777 is sometimes too small.

Mike
I can confirm the 777 route on NZ1.
I've just spoken to ANZ because I noticed on Viewtrail (Trailfinders) that the aircraft listed for my trip in November had changed to a 777 200. ANZ said it's only just changed over and that they can't allocate seating yet. I was advised to call back next week.

The ANZ 777 is very similar in terms of interior fit out. The IFE and seating are identical. The only downside is the tighter Y seat pitch on the 777 - 32" instead of 34" on the 744, and the smaller Premium Economy cabin on the 777.
Going daily on the SFO flights has also reduced some of the loading on the LAX service, hence the ability to down-gauge NZ1/2 to 777 throughout during the off season. Chances are NZ5/6 will stay 744 for the forseeable.
Both are nicely configured planes, if you ask me.
Looking forward to the Trip Report.
Regards,
Mike
