Is it EVER possible to upgrade from PE to UC using miles if I have a lowly K ticket? I know I can't just call up, but I was wondering about at check-in or something. Or if not, is it possible to change my ticket to an upgradable fare?

Yup - you can pay the difference to an S, and then use miles.

They USED to allow it "on the day", but I think they've started to clamp down on "illegal upgrades" of late.

Welcome to V-Flyer!

As preiffer said, it is possible. I've done the equivelant of the suggested by paying a fare difference to a Economy upgradable fare, then using miles to upgrade to W.

For what it's worth, I phoned up about a month before I was going to travel to do mine... not sure if you can do it day of departure or not... I suppose if you wanted to secure availability you should do it early.

We tried to upgrade family "on the day" and indeed they have clamped down a lot. We were offered the pay the difference, but not allowed the K to J

Have rarely had a problem upgrading to J from K with miles, until my last trip, when they made me pay £126 to upgrade to W (I think) first. Then I could upgrade - maybe they are clamping down. I don't know if I was lucky in the past - I think there used to be a policy of allowing this on the day of travel if there was space. Maybe that has changed?

I always do my upgrades at the airport, and had very friendly service in doing so. Just be polite and ask nicely - it goes a long way. From my experience - if you intend to do an upgrade like this, don't do a DIY check in to your allocated/chosen PE seat. It may mean you need to be offloaded from the flight then re-booked before they can upgrade you. That can take a while! And the earlier you get to the airport, the more likely you will be to find a UC seat available for upgrade (and the longer you can spend in the Clubhouse :D).

Tried to upgrade from K to G using miles yesterday assumuing I could pay the difference to an upgradable fare class then use miles. Flight was overbooked...fine.

Board in PE and sit down. A ground agent starts to upgrade people in PE saying "Mr. Smith your seat has been changed to 8G" so I assume it was an op-up. Needless to say I did not get called and was sorta mad as I checked again in the CH about the upgrade and the helpful staff put a note in my record saying I wanted to upgrade if avail. There were only 45 people in UC according to the galley sheet...

Never give up hope even if you do nothing. My husband, daughter & I were travelling on K class tickets to Miami & all 3 of us were upgraded at check-in to UC & all 3 of us were red members then. I didn't ask, I didn't expect it but, I have to admit that we were obviously very lucky & thoroughly enjoyed it.
