As V-Ben has reported in Zambandit's VS 601 thread, VS200 on Wednesday was severely delayed en route. We were on this flight. We left LHR on time and the captain told us that a tropical storm was passing to the south of Hong Kong but that it should have passed by the time we arrived. However when we arrived in the HKG area, the storm had strengthened and become Typhoon Prapiroon. No aircraft had been able to land in HKG for the previous hour so we diverted to PVG, two hours flying time away. Fortunately, a crew was available at PVG to take us back to HKG and the plan was to be airborne again within the hour as it was reported that conditions were improving at HKG. In the event, it was decided to deplane at PVG which took some time and negotiation with the Chinese authorities. After four hours in a transit lounge, we took off again with the captain confident that we would get in to HKG, although he warned us that the final approach would be very bumpy.

And so it proved, and after around 10 minutes of severe turbulence, full power was applied and we went around. We then circled for a while and then tried again with unfortunately the same result: a second go-around. The captain reported that the conditions were well outside safe limits for the aircraft so back we went to PVG! After our five-hour round trip, we arrived back at PVG at around 5 am. This time, we were off the aircraft fairly quickly and taken through immigration, even though most of us did not have visas, and bussed downtown to the Hilton. Here we were given breakfast and lunch, and a room for each passenger, group or family. We had a couple of hours sleep and considered having a look at Shanghai but it was very hot and humid and the area didn’t look very inviting for a stroll, so we didn’t bother. At 2 pm, buses arrived and took us back to the airport where we did a normal checkin. We were travelling Upper so were given passes to the First Class lounge, which had drinks and snacks. Our estimated flight time was 6.30 pm but we did not board until 7.30 pm and then sat there until 10 pm when we eventually took off. There were obviously a few issues going on as the crew were clearly frustrated with the local VS ground staff and the authorities. So, eventually we landed at HKG, at around midnight, 31 hours late! The frustrations continued, however, for the poor people going on to SYD as their onward flight was cancelled and they were to spend the night in a hotel and take the following day’s flight.

The two crews were excellent, keeping us informed at all times. It was a situation out of VS’ control and we felt they did all they could for us. However, we shan’t mind if the rest of our flights on this RTW trip are less eventful! On the plus side, though, we had three UCS experiences for the price of one, and we visited an extra country on the way!

Certainly sounds like the staff did their best to sort out a bad situation. So well done to them. Still, an unpleasant experience.

I am afraid I have some bad news for you. The Hilton is the hotel the crew use in Shanghai. Based on one of their recommendations, I discovered one of the best 'blind man' massage places is right behind the Hilton. And if you had turned right out of the front door, there is some good shopping a few minutes walk away. But I have to admit, the area does not look that inviting, especially in the summer hear and when you are, no doubt, knackered.

Wow!

I had wondered what had happened to the flight when I read about the typhoon in zambandit's thread. It is good to get first hand information of it - but obviously not good to have to experience it [:0] VS certainly did their best to sort out a situation beyond their control but it must have been horrendous at the time.

Thanks for the report

On a lighter note, did you get miles for the PVG-HKG-PVG leg? [:w]

Wow, some ordeal!
But fair play to the Chinese authorities for actually letting a plane load of people without visas out to hotels for the night. It just goes to show that the immovable communist bureaucracy can actually be quite sensible in such situations. I can't see that happening quite so readily on a flight that needed to stop in the US, or our very own country for that matter.
Though I'm sure VS had to pay a "fine" ;)

Great update, it does sound as though Virgin did everything they could to assist and make people comfortable, as well as try to get you into Hong Kong. Good for them and good to hear some good customer service even in a very difficult and trying situation.

Ouch, I've been reading the updates on this flight internally and cringing for the poor passengers and crew... not a nice situation.

The HKG Observatory left the typhoon warning at level 3, which generally means safe airline operations... as in town the winds were pretty light... unfortunately the situation at Lantau kept swinging wildly.

I've landed in HKG in a Typhoon (Utor the last big one to cause chaos at the airport) and it wasn't nice!

I'm glad you felt the crew did a good job.... they must have been feeling the stress and frustration as much as the passengers and no matter how experieced a flyer you are you'd prefer to be on the ground in that kind of weather.

Although it sounds like you had some frustrations with the PVG authorities, it was the best place for you to divert to. I know some of the other airlines flights ended up in places where they would have had no ground support.

I sincerely hope you're next flight passes smoothly!!!!!

Thanks for all your comments. We really enjoyed Hong Kong, and rushed around making up for the lost time. Now in Singapore having had a great flight down with SQ. The food knocked socks off VS, IÕm afraid[:#]

Thanks. If I am diverted again to Shanghai, I shall know where to go;) But hang on, shopping[:0] Only something I do out of absolute necessity, IÕm afraid;)

HavenÕt had any miles at all yet[n] Have a PVG-HKG, VS1200 boarding card stub, though, which must be a rarity:)

Very glad:D

On a more serious note, just grateful to be in one piece. Dozens of people lost their lives in the typhoon and half a million were evacuated from their homes.

Yes, I was surprised. On the first night, we were kept penned in the transit lounge by security and the police. This situation actually highlighted some of the ambiguities about modern China. The transit lounge was lined with shops and a cafe which were shut when we arrived but then rapidly opened. However, most of us couldnÕt buy anything because we didnÕt have any local currency and they didnÕt accept western credit cards. They would however accept US dollars or euros[:0] But again, most of us didnÕt have those. Some people asked to be allowed up the escalator to the ATM but were not allowed to do so for immigration reasons.

Thanks. Yes, both crews were great. We thought at the time, that as well as having to deal with us they would have been uncertain of their own situation as well. The second crew had only arrived in PVG the previous day and were called in from their rest day.
