I have just made a very small payment for an item on EBay using Paypal. I used the new Virgin Amex and have found that I have been charged a 'currency conversion fee'.

This is because, although the payment was to a UK user, Paypal converted my payment to US Dollars - then then back again. It has added over 5% to the figure I paid.

As this is only a matter of pennies for this transaction, I am not getting worked up about it, but - if this is normal - I won't be using my Amex card on Paypal any more.

Bear this in mind, if you are paying for expensive items on EBay.

Nick

This is normal with any Amex card and PayPal.

Quote from PayPal web site:

American Express cards will be charged in USD. Paying with American Express will result in currency conversion fees if your card is not denominated in USD and/or if you send a non-USD payment.
