Hi,

Would like to get some advice on these 2 hotels please - the Gansevoort and the Hotel on Rivington. Am going to New York next month and myself and the boyfriend are completely unable to make a decision on hotels.

I like the look of the Gansevoort and the area is good - near to Chelsea / Soho, yet the Rivington looks like it has fantastic views over the city, but not the best of areas. Having said that, every time I've been to New York I've made extensive use of taxis etc so not having everything on your doorstop isn't a problem.

Any views / recommendations based on these appreciated.

Thanks,

David.

I can't comment on the Rivington but the Gansevoort is fab - the hotel itself is very cool, trendy and hip, the bar is excellent for people watching and getting sozzled, the roof top pool is a joy on a hot day (and full of attractive types).

Location wise, for a holiday, it is excellent. For business its a cab ride to everything. Opposite is Pastis, great French bistro (gooiest French Onion Soup ever) run by the same people as Balthazar. In fact, the whole adjacent area is buzzing with bars, restaurants and clubs and many of them are fine! Added to that walking to Chelsea and all the bars and restaurants is easy.

I'm sure you've checked their Web site, the hotel is better ...

I booked the Gansevoort soon after the first post so am really pleased to read the above [y]

The location looks great and my flatmate loved it, so I think it shoudl be fine. Out of interest - can you get rooms overlooking the city rather than the Hudson river? The great views was the main selling point of the Rivington.

Thanks,

David.

Yes you can get rooms overlooking the city and I think you're more likely to than the river ... but ensure you're above say the 8th floor. There is however a v large building just north of the hotel (I don't know what it is) that blocks the view of midtown, but there is a lot else to see.

BTW if views is what you want you could try the Le Parker Meridien on 56/57th between 6th and 7th ... if you get a park view room/suite (the jnr suites are ace) on floor 35 and above you get one of the most amazing views in New York!
