This morning I got the message
"SORRY THE SITE IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

Blah Blah Blah... "

Whats going on when they do this? Are new special offers being loaded up.. Enquiring minds want to know.

Not to be crabby, but this isn't unusual. Websites are not infallible, power outages occur, plainly: s**t happens.

To be fair, Nick, va.com does have a higher than average downtime compared to most other commercial sites. Given that a high amount of their core business is transacted over the web, I'm surprised at how often it appears to be offline over a typical month.

True, Pete - but we don't have millions and millions of £ riding on it being available 24/7

This is too true ... a commercial Web site such as VS should operate with 99.95%+ planned uptime ... I'd guess their actual is poor compared to this and that should be a significant cause for concern (in other businesses heads would roll!). £milions will be transacted over it and that's why ...
