Fifty-One have launched a new Upper Class magazine:

From the APA website.

Virgin Atlantic has appointed brand communications agency Fifty-One to create and publish Travel Notes, an in-flight customer magazine for the airline's first class passengers.

Fifty-One, which designed Virgin Atlantic's previous in-flight customer magazine Carlos, said the first issue of Travel Notes, which appears on October 10, would feature contributions from travel writers Tom Dixon, David Schrigley and Juliette Lewis, and illustrations from actor Mackenzie Crook.

Travel Notes, which is biannual, will be available in the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class lounges at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and will have an initial circulation of 95,000 copies.

Pete stuck a release about this up on the home page a little while ago.

Cant wait to see what all this is about! VS sometimes really do miss the mark - stop spending money on naff publications and put the capital into amenity kits and decent meals

[/rant]

Personally, i think they could take a leaf out of our book and create a quarterly publication made mainly of of Virgin specific information. Trip reports for VS destinations, destination specific info, new routes, etc, a bit like iFly but even tying into miles earning opportunities and seat maps, and perhaps other Virgin brands for funding, info and advertisement, like Virgin Wines. I'd much rather read that than some wise words on whats hot and whats not from a Z list celeb :)

Thanks,
Sarah

Carlos was kind of quirky, but sometimes just a little too avant-garde for the sake of it. I got the feeling the illustrator must have been the bastard child of Gerald Scarfe and a bottle of Absinthe, such was the occasional excess of the design. Interesting to hear it was zero cost. Good on Virgin's marketing team for cutting the deal. But, as Sarah says, there's a missed opportunity to talk to frequent flyers as (literally) a captive audience. Carlos would waffle on about Peruvian nose flutes when what we really wanted to know was how to beat the queue at JFK immigration.

Let's hope Travel Notes isn't all up it's own derrire. I shall find out in about 5 hours when I get to Gatwick Clubhouse...

Ah, but look what happened last time they apparently talked to flyers about what they wanted from the amenity kit ;)
