don't understand what to do IPOD

Hi guys, sorry to sound dim, but I just replaced my pc with a 2048mb 3428mhz one ( so I can play games at work, lol.


Anyway I do not know how to make my Ipod stuff/account go to the new one, it keeps asking me if I want to start all over, but I want my songs n stuff to just go over to this pc.

What do I do, I am panicking a bit.

I have downloaded the programme. Frightened I wipe my ipod clean by mistake and lose my pics and music forever.

I Had this problem when i moved pc's. Im Afraid you have to move all your music & pictures from your old pc to your new one and then upload them onto iTunes. [this can be annoying when you have large amounts of files]. I don't know why Apple insist on doing this, they say its to stop Music from Been stolen, but i cant see it myself.
If any of your files have been bought from iTunes when you try to play them it will ask for your username/email address and password then this will activate all your files bought from iTunes, [yet you can only do this 3 times to prevent people from buying music then sending them to other people].

You can deauthorise your old computer which frees up a "copy license". The idea is that you can only use your purchased music on so many concurrent computers...

Its not easy at all, TBH I had to bring my new laptop into work to get our IT to sort it out for me, I thought I was good on computers but it baffled me.

Ermm - bit late but isn't it just a case of going into preferences/advanced/general noting where your tunes are stored. Copying that subdir to the new machine and putting this back into your itunes? Then deauthorise the old and authoriese the new?

Always seemed reasonably straightforward to me?

old pc is shagged and will no longer go online so I can't deautherise it. Managed to re populate my ipod again, but am still stuck as to autherising my new pc to carry on with my account.


What I need is a human being on a phone line to help me through it,
God sakes hundreds of peoples pcs must go on the blink and have to buy a new one.

You should be able to authorise the new one (and possibly deauthorise the old one) on line?

This is the problem with 'FREE' software such as iTunes. Why should Apple provide you with software and help you fix it when you chose to buy a new computer? Now if you had paid for it, that would be a different matter. Not really a justification, but being from the IT arena I can appreciate why they don't offer this service, can you imagine how many people it would take to support the world's iTunes users?

Neil, I bet your IT dept where chuffed with you asking them to sort out your iTunes library migration.

If I bought a load of add-ons for my car and then bought a new car I would get a mechanic to move what I wanted onto the new one. Why does everyone think that IT is easy and anyone can do it? Just because you can use a mouse and keyboard doesn't mean that you can do anything with a PC ;-)

Because that is the promise made, to an extent. "Buy this ipod, and the rest is easy". I guess the other reason is that PC mechanics seem to cost more than motor mechanics, and they are difficult to find.

No not to flame like - it is just banter.

But in my part of the world (and more for my car than others I guess), motor mechanics are most definately more expensive than PC mechanics.

How many car ads make similar claims - you still have to pay for it to be serviced (in most instances anyway):)

Well thats me told [B)] - thankfully we have a wonderful IT man who I often help with various things so he does me favours too[y] ( you see, some IT men are nice;))

I kinda get what you are saying, but Apple must understand that people will change there pc's and want to move the iTunes library with them, so surely should make it a bit easier for simple IT people like me and EGG. Yes I know its free software but we are paying a lot of money for the initial iPod and the downloads (both which require the iTunes software, its not like we can use another one) so I am sure Apple are doing ok out of the deal[:?]

Apple get a HUGE benefit from having their iPod media player hooked into their own proprietary software. The fact that they also offer it as a free download (in fact, FORCE people to download it if they want Quicktime) is just a ploy to get the technology more and more ubiquitous.

Marketing 101 : Earn market share by providing a product that is perceived as "free" - then make money on the content/hardware that is licensed through it...

Strange I thought the £370 paid for the ipod and what was in the box, that being a disc with the programme on it.

The free download upgrade programmes are a bit of a joke, almost like the "free" amenity kits in UCS[:o)]

I admit when it comes to IT I am not good, same way I can drive my beemer very well, but then what goes on under the bonnet is completely alien to me. We all have our own areas of expertise I guess.

I asked on here because everyone is kind and for the most part intelligent and expert in their fields.[}:)]
