Reading about this in the International Hearld Tribune this morning. As long as the older 747-400s continue to earn their keep, continue to be efficient and continue to deliver VS reliable service then theres no real need to dispose of them. The only thing that needs disposing is NOVA.

Long live the VS 747-400s [^]

Will be interesting to see what move VS make next - What is the current status of the VS order book?? They originally ordered 26 A346's which comprised of 13 actual orders and 13 options. Have all of the 13 options been exercised??? :D

Absolutely, and BA manage a fleet of 747s some of which are 20 years old and will be 25+ before they replace them.

Long live the 747 and buy some more (Oh and yes get rid of Nova and do a BA and put VPort on every plane)!

I don't understand what's happening with the 747's, they are due for replacement in 2-3 years but they have extended lease on them? In my oppinon they need replacing now, compared to the Airbus aircraft they arn't the best to work on.

Perhaps not the best to work on, but certainly the best PE seats in the fleet if you're upstairs...:D

The older planes are no hassle to work on and maintain...its more of a case of what type/manufacturer of the plane that makes a difference. Some types are better than others. VS are very happy with the 747 operation and had no hesitation extending the leases.

What would be interesting is to see VS use some of the discount they might get on the A380s (which, incidentally, I am sorry are being delayed - I would fly an Airbus over a Boeing any day, as I think they are much better and quieter) on refurbing the non-V:Port fleet, including the B744s. If they get anything like the discount SG apparently got, it would easily pay for it, and leave some petty cash for another couple of new B744s or A346s to cover the refits. Bit of a PR double edged sword though - would be good for VS to show they are using reclaimed cash to upgrade all the existing non-V:Port fleet, but would look poor for Airbus seeing discounts going to refit some Boeings....[:I]

Me too re airbus over boeing.[^]

This is a good idea in theory; now if only airline managers were able to come to the idea that profits can be put back into the company;) Actually, to be fair, VS does put quite put a lot of money into improving its product - providing it involves the three letters LHR[}:)]
