whilst browsin on a.net i came across a photo with loads of Ba a/c at heathrow. this made me think how complicated the BA flight organisation would be. now its not so bad for VS as they have a tny fleet (so small they can name all of the planes) but Ba has hundreds of a/c.
if one a/c was to be dead late would BA take an a/c from somewhere else as they have plenty or would the passengers still have to wait?

Yes, but believe me there are no shortage of delays on BA due to the old chestnut 'late incoming aircraft'.

BA tend to pad schedules unlike the no-frills airlines so supposedly the total effects of late running aircraft are less.

A bit of "fudge factor" is built into the schedules so that the lateness of one flight does not impact so much on the other flights it has to operate.

it is not a fudge factor, it is common sense. Rather than having turn around times of 30mins and punctualility of 50% increase the turn around time (ie the standing time on the gate, the thing that costs money) and increase the chance of planes taking off on time.

Just flight times, how often on long haul to you land early (or not late).
