MIA or LAX in PE?

I want a holiday in March/April time and want some where warm with a beach! Although will not be spending all my time on the beach. Will prob try and travl PE as there are some great fare to both in the sale. I have never been to either LA or Miami so would like recomendations. Will prob be traveling alone backpacker style. But nowhere too dodgey.

I would go for Miami.

So Cal weather at that time of the year can be a little cool where as So. Florida should be just about perfect.

I've not been to Miami or LA but I'd definitely go for Miami. Its on my list of 'places to visit before I die' and theres something to the city that appeals to me for some reason. If you're travelling alone then Miani Beach wouldn't go a miss [:p]

Just so you know: that time of year is college Spring Break here, prime season for all college beachbunnies to head for Florida, Mexico, or California. Book early, and be prepared for some noise, partying, and rowdy behavior.

If this is what you are hunting, go MIA! Florida seems to get the brunt of it (and, like already mentioned, the weather is better).

If you want quiet/privacy on the beach, forget about it... If you really want to avoid the worst of the student excess, book a slightly better chain hotel, and ask their 'student policy' when booking. Some of the hotels actively shun boorish behavior by their guests and will state so if you ask.

Can't afford the rate quoted? Pack extra earplugs and a double dose of patience if you book a student-friendly hotel.

Thanks for all the replies. When is spring break. I'm a student myself so may be more fun to go then. I think i might go to miami as the weather is better and its going to be a party.

Unfortunately, it's not a set week here. Every university has their own break schedule - but Florida is a prime destination! Pick a week after 5 March and go before the last week of April.

California 'scenery' is usualy good, but just where do you think all those USC and UCLA students go when it's break time? That's right - FLORIDA.

Deffo go to Miami and then wander dwon the coast to Key West where it will be even warmer and enjoy some party atmosphere on Duval Street!!!

I'd also say that MIA would be your best bet as the weather is likely to be much better there - as others have stated, LA can be a bit cool around this time of year. We went there just before Easter this year and although it had better weather than England, it wasn't exactly perfect for the beach.

If you are doing the backpacker thing then there is this place http://www.theclayhotel.com/ in South Beach. I used to live round the corner from it and had friends stay there. They always said it was good but I never saw more than the lobby.

There are a couple of hostel type establishments for backpackers in South Beach and it is definitely where the action is in Miami at night. There are also some good and inexpensive places to eat but they take some searching out amongst the more glitzy and expensive locations.

Its been a few years since Ive been back so things might have changed but that part of Washington Ave is safe (with the usual disclaimers about keeping your wits about you at all times as you would anywhere else).

I'm getting quite jealous typing this..... have fun.

Is this a euphemism for 'you'll freeze your butt off in you go to CA'? Me and the present Mrs Treelo went to LA a couple of Aprils ago and did just that. make it Miami Tom

Has to be Miami. If you go during spring break you'll be asked for id repeatedly though(I was there for spring break a few years ago and got asked in every bar even though 21 was a long, long time ago for me).The atmosphere is great with the clubs and bars buzzing.Does get very busy though and finding accommodation that hasn't doubled in price can be tricky.Hope you have a great time.
